Charging 2 6-Volt batteries in series

This fall I bought an '88 Skeeter SK2000 bass boat with an '89 Yamaha 2 cycle 225 hp Excel G V-6 motor. The boat has a 24 volt trolling motor system with 2 12V batteries in parallel, with a dedicated charging system.

The boat/start battery system is set up with 2 6V batteries in series. The boat sat for over a year before I bought it, batteries were sulfated, I replaced with two of the same series 6V batteries.

I haven't had the boat on the water yet and won't until next spring. It appears the boat was made for dual batteries on the start side, but my question is will the Yamaha charging system charge 2 6V batteries while running or did I waste my money, should have bought 12v's?

Thanks, Larry

Re: Charging 2 6-Volt batteries in series

Two six volt batteries connected in series have a 12 volt output. They are the equivalent of one 12 volt battery.

So yes, the charging system in the motor will recharge the two batteries when they are connected in series.

Hindsight being crystal clear, I think you now know that you have been better off with one 12 volt battery to start and operate the motor.

You say that your trolling motor system has 2 12 volt batteries in parallel. Two 12 volt batteries in parallel have an output of 12 volts.

Batteries being connected in parallel increase the effective capacity but don't effect the voltage. Batteries being connected in series increase the voltage but don't effect the capacity.

Re: Charging 2 6-Volt batteries in series

I apologize, the trolling motor batteries are in series. The two 6V batteries is how the boat came equipped from the previous owner. I know in my motor home I am better off with multiple 6V heavy duty deep cycle golf cart batteries for MH house power.

I understand I don't need the advantage of two 6V vs. one 12V, but for now I'll use what I have, the 6V are brand new.

Thanks for the reply
