Check your spin on fuel filter!

This pertains to my OMC 5.8 L Bayliner. The base of the spin on fuel filter (where the rubber seal meets the filter body) was corroded, breaking the seal, causing the fuel system to suck air. What a bizarre issue. I had a friend who is a diesel mechanic help me. He says he sees this all the time on diesels that have the spin on filters so it must be a somewhat common problem. Left me stranded in the middle of nowhere. Boat simply STOPPED. I was sure it was an ignition issue.

I can see that happening with the filter being on the suction side of the mechanical fuelpump as it is. I'll have to keep that in mind thanks for sharing.

good reason to put a nice coat of oil on the filter gasket besides the fact that it keeps it from getting stuck on there...
I have heard of this happening on some of the bases...my old OE OMC one is still OK...

Looks like the real issue was a bad fuel pump. Had another failure today.

I would change mine now but I can't get it off ... probably been on there so long it welded itself. And trying to find a fuel filter for my KC hasn't been all that easy.

Living the dream ...
