What is the cause of chine walk? I have a 17' bass boat with a jack plate and a 150 on it. Will a jack plate adjustment help it?

Re: Chine Walk

It may....
Hull design and load have alot to do with it as well.
You may not be producing enough speed to get up and clean.
I've seen several cases where there was not enough set-back in the plate being used and the CG was too far fwd to keep the bow up as needed for the hull to work as it should..I've also "experienced" too much set-back and found porpoise was the main issue with the CG too far back for a bow-lifting prop.

Re: Chine Walk

I have no porpoise issue at all. The boat jumps on plane quick, probably due to the hydrofoil on the engine. When it gets close to 60 it starts to walk.

Have you tried going up some with the engine?
What prop are you running and how much setback do you have?

I haven't moved anything because I don't know what to move, hence my inquiry here. It has a manual jack plate on it but I'm not sure what the setback is. Is engine height and setback a cause and or fix for chine walking?

Re: Chine Walk

Every boat I have been in that chine walked was at the very top end. I belive you have exceeded the design speed of the boat. Too much air under the boat. You need to move to a hull like a hydroplane witn no center hull so the chine will say in the water. If you can raise the bow without fliping it may help.

I would just slow some unless your racing.

Re: Chine Walk

Every boat will chine walk if it's got the power to do so.
Mine will start it at about 65, but I just drive thru it.
It is an aquired bit of driving.
But as others have said, you may be at the max of your hull design.
What boat do you have?

It's an older Blazer bass boat with Johnson 150. I'm not really into the speed thing anyway, I was just testing it at WOT.

You was at WOT and trimmed out?
If so, just slow down a tad and you will be ok.
Like I said, mine starts about 5900RPM and all I have to do is mash it a little more and drive through it.

It's the back trying to pass the front... you're past the hull speed for sure... nice!

Buddy of mine has a venture bass boat with a 150 Mariner on it, the boat was new to him so he decided to take it out and run it. He got it up to 75MPH and finally decided to back out of it. Talking about chine walking, he said that boat was hovering on air, wasn't even on the water :D. That is a good way to flip your boat. I have no desire to go that fast in a bass boat although my uncles would flat out fly, I know from experience .

Not being fortunate enough to have such a fast full size boat, Here is chine walk, it's of my R/C Fast Electric 32" Surface Drive model Offshore boat, notice the rooster tail, I think it's running over it's peak speed, I know the video is not the best, it's a few yrs old with an old cheap Canon 2mp digital camera. Look closely in the beginning to see the chinewalk:

Me too ^^^ I am confused too about a 60 MPH boat with a hydrofoil. Who knows what conditions that is adding . . . ?

The only reason it drove thru it, is, it was put into a turn for the rest of the run. If I kept it dead straight, the chine walk would continue, unless I throttled down, or it flipped. Bear in mind, on such a small boat as this, minor changes in the rudder steering at this speed (if not a real steady hand) cancels the chinewalk, it doesn't mean it stops.

That is right Mike, same thing in a full blown version.
You make small corrections to the steering, but you have to know how small.
That's why I said an acquired bit of driving.

Fair enough, here's another R/C boat of mine, a fibreglass pro raceboat (German made) a bit smaller with a stepped hull, it is a challenge to keep it right side up, it's so skittish!
