...up here in Kansas City you'd need a full blown ice breaker to get a sea trial in!

I know of an icebreaker in Russia that currently isn't being used.

Don't know what it's like in Wichita, but up here in Kansas City you'd need a full blown ice breaker to get a sea trial in!

Pretty much. Fortunately it's at Lake Texoma, where the weekend forecast looks pretty good.

Well, boat was a strikeout. Not in any way as described, it was a well worn POS. The search continues!

Sorry to hear about the condition. It really stinks when someone's ad isn't in anyway based on reality. :mad-new: At least there is still a large inventory of used boats out there. Keep looking you'll find yours eventually. Everyone does.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was thinking. As someone who buys and sells a lot of cars, boat sellers are flaky as hell!

Always amazed me how something that looks/sounds so good in an ad can be such a dog when you actually see it. Good luck in your search!

Keep up the hunt. You still have the seasons in your favor right now. I never understand why people put up ads that don't represent what they are selling. Waste of everyone's time.

That's too bad, we've all been there but what a let down when you get out of the truck and don't find what you were expecting.

If you think boats are bad try jet skis HA!, I actually had to raise my voice a woman once after I drove out there to find it didn't run, she knew it didn't run and had told me otherwise. Here response "it just needs a new starter" yeah right

Love the avatar "uhh...yeah....I'm gonna go ahead and have you reimburse me for the gas money that I burned driving out here to look at your junk"

Hey onewhippedpuppy, just saw this thread. If you have your heart set on a Cobalt, the mechanic I take my Cobalt to is selling one for a friend. It's a 220, believe the year is right around 2000 and close to your budget if I remember. I took a look at it last fall, looked like a really clean boat, always stored inside. I think it has a 7.4 Merc with Bravo 3 drive. Anyway, if youre interested, PM me and I'll give you his number.

atx111, you've got mail.

It is amazing how much photos can hide. Also how full of crap sellers can be. I'm not sure how "like new" equates to a faded and scratched hull, stains, separating vinyl seams, rusted trailer wheels, etc. Even the pointed questions like "any stains in the carpet" were not answered honestly. Sometimes I think there is a disconnect between my definition of excellent and the seller, but in this case I think the guy was just full of crap and hoping that I would buy it regardless.

I don't think there is any disconnect. The sellers know if they lie you will come down and look. Maybe they only have a 1% chance of selling it to you in the condition they know it's in but they think 1% is better than 0%.

Wish I got in on this one sooner. You have yourself a serious case of first world problems. I'm not sure Chris Craft is a step down from Cobalt. At least not there modern offerings (My '85 chris craft scorpion was not all that different from every other open bow of it's time).

A guy up the road from me has a very expensive looking Cobalt in his driveway for a week or 2 at the beginning and end of the season. I notice that the bow cover wraps around the bow. Many open bows have covers that sit flat. To me that is a big deal. Keeping water out is the number one factor in my book for how long the boat will last. Did you do any research as to the build materials? Most high end builders have abandoned wood floors and stringers but as far as I am aware wooden transoms are still the norm.

I guess this is all a case of to little to late. I only hope that whatever you end up with is solid and without hidden problems. (Marine survey?)

Another thing I've learned the hard way- when you answer the ad, ask when the pics were taken. Might not do any good, but I've answered more than one ad to find that the posted pictures were obviously taken at a much earlier time, probably when the current owner bought the thing.

Re: Chris Craft Launch 22 vs Cobalt 223

I believe the Cobalts have been all composite since the 1990s. I know the modern era Chris Craft boats were as well.

Pictures were an issue in this case, the seller was over an hour away from the boat and only had a few older pictures. I took a gamble because he so adamantly swore that the condition was "like new". Also because I've been looking for a new boat since last fall, and this is the first one that I was reasonably interested in. Most of the boat advertisements that I've looked at royally SUCK. Very little detail, very few pictures, or stock pictures from a 10+ year old brochure. I may have to roll the dice again at some point, in hopes that the seller is being honest.

I believe people are fundamentally good as well... The only problem is they are usually fundamentally good to themselves first before others.
