That will work fine! Just make sure your base plates on the legs are big enough to not puncture the deck. And I would put gussets in each corner. And while the engine is at the single end of the "T" I would tie that leg to each side of the boat to stop it from leaning one way or the other.

Very good, measurements start tonight, and maybe I'll fabricate the rolling mechanism... I'm thinking of using some skateboard wheels and their bearings and running a bolt through them along with washers to keep everything tight up against one-another. I know it sounds weird, but I'll bet it works just fine, pics and video once I get something fabbed up...

Re: CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Cabin Cruiser Restoration (With Pics & Video!!!)

Ok, so here's what I mocked up just to see if my theory was sound. I think it will work out well... OK, before everyone tells me how to build a gantry and gussett it and support it from smashing through the deck... I will build a very sturdy Gantry. All uprights and spans will be 4x4's and the uprights will be appropriately supported and of sufficient width not to break through the deck. I was mainly worried about how to "roll" it, but I think this should do it.

Any thoughts on whether the chain and bolts through the chain will be sturdy enough. How much does a 5.7 Merc 260 HP engine weigh anyways???

Oh yeah, thanks to my videographer, my son... :)

Double it, or it will "Rack" on you. Use some flat iron for rails between the two wheel assemblies and then two pieces coming down for the hook. somethiing like this (real bad drawing)

Re: CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Cabin Cruiser Restoration (With Pics & Video!!!)

I'm tracking with what you're saying, I thought about that as well. I've got some 1/8 steel that I can use in lieu of the chains coming down and we can actually weld the rolling mechanism rigid and hang a "V" chain beneath that with a hook. What would work best to winch the motor out? My buddy says a come-along, but then how do we reverse it and let it down easy on the deck, or back into the bilge when we're done... I'm thinking block and tackle??? Any suggestions?

Well, I got my measurements, and disassembled some of the things that would be in my way. It's been a while since I was last in my boat and DANG, the cockpit area is large. I had to modify my thinking a bit, but I'll get it all squared away. I took off some upholstery that was attached to the rear brightwork, and I took all the screws out of the engine hatch hinges, but left the hatch covers in place for now, as I'll be working in that area to fine tune my construction. Going to get lumber and get to building. I'll have video and such posted up this evening I hope, or at the latest tomorrow morning. Wish me luck...

That's funny... I bought the same thing, only in the 1 ton version... Haha...

Ok, Hoist purchased, Gantry partially completed and here are the videos of the day... A very HOT day, which you might hear me mention once or twice in the videos...

So far so good... Not as easy as it was in my mind, but it never is right???

Any concerns, or advice is always welcome... Thanks...

I sense a little ribbin from the Okie Enjuneerun gradeeyut !!!

By the way, I didn't get any useful advice in the Mercury I/O & Inboard Engines & Outdrives forum, so I'm asking again here. Do you, or anyone else think I'd be better off re-furbishing the Transom Assembly and Outdrive from a decent salvage boat, or using my corroded Transom Assembly and trying to re-furbish and paint it and attach an SE 106 outdrive to what I already have. I know it's a re-ask, but wasn't getting anywhere in the other forum...

Thanks...

Re: CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Cabin Cruiser Restoration (With Pics & Video!!!)

I've been very busy with the holiday weekend and actually had to work over the 4th of July, but I did manage to put together a fairly comprehensive To-Do List: It's an ambitious list, but hopefully it will keep me motivated and on-track. Goal for re-launching of Miss Dimple is by July 4th, 2012.

1. Finish building Gantry & supports for engine in cockpit area.
2. Remove Engine.
3. Remove Transom Assembly.
4. Remove Steering.
5. Remove controls / Throttle cables.
6. Continue and Complete Blister removal.
7. Repair fiberglass on hull.
8. Re-core Swim platform.
9. Sand / Fair Hull and Swim Platform.
10. Prime / Sand Hull.
11. Paint hull and Swim platform.
12. Sand hull and Swim platform, and paint again, polish / buff.
13. Repair / Refurbish / Replace Transom Assembly.
14. Repair / Replace steering components.
15. Repair / Replace Shift cables / system.
16. Drain / clean / repair fuel system, to include new hoses and filters.
17. Evaluate / re-route / electrical with battery switches (Inverters?)
18. Re-install engine / fuel lines, complete install of shift controls and throttle cables and steering connections.
19. Trim controls check, bleed, re-evaluate.
20. Install new, or Re-furbished outdrive.
21. Remove and re-oil teak.
22. Re-upholster interior cabin.
23. Install new cooler seats and sun-pad in salon area.
24. Install new Bimini top.

Re: CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Cabin Cruiser Restoration (With Pics & Video!!!)

So, I have help coming tomorrow for final construction on the travel leg of the Gantry. I need it to be perfectly level, even though the boat isn't and my helper, my son is at his mother's this week.

Today I spent time sanding and grinding away some more blisters.

I'm thinking that on some of the deeper blisters, I will certainly use some CSM cut into small patches and fill those areas in, but on the places where I just ground very shallow, couldn't I just use some thick peanut butter to fill those in and sand em down before re-finishing, i.e. painting??? If I have to cut hundreds of little patches for each blister and try to work inside the cure time of my resin, that's going to be a huge PITA!

Thoughts??? Thanks...

I am concerned about the legs of your hoist mounted to such a small piece of fiberglass in the deck. I would hate to see you pick up the motor and those side pieces of your deck crack or break, I hope they don't.

Re: CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Cabin Cruiser Restoration (With Pics & Video!!!)

I was concerned about that as well, but that portion of the deck is shaped kind of like two "U"s or a "W" with multiple folds in the fiberglass and is probably the strongest portion of deck on the whole boat. I hung over the engine bay and did some pull-ups on the gantry, "I weigh about 240 lbs." and there wasn't even a creak from the deck. I think it will be fine, but regardless will go slow with the engine removal and keep an "eye" and an "ear" on the deck.

Re: CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Cabin Cruiser Restoration (With Pics & Video!!!)

I can say from experiences that those engines are heavy. I think the 260 is around 1000 pounds with all its dressings. I am worried the deck would not be able to handle the weight.

Re: CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Cabin Cruiser Restoration (With Pics & Video!!!)

The photo in post #83 is of my boat, and I was also worried about my deck supporting the weight. My 6.2 diesel + tranny + V-drive had to weigh at least 1200 lbs. and I didn't hear a single creak out of it. Of course every boat is built differently but I think if you spread the load out over as wide an area as possible you'll probably be OK.

Well crap!!! Now y'all have got me thinking, or more to the point worried. I'm not so much worried about the deck, but rather my roller system for the gantry. I found these specs after reading your posts... 880 lbs...

Specifications:
Fuel Type - Gasoline
Horsepower - 260-hp
Warranty - 3 Years
Displacement - (cu/cc) 350.00 cu / 5,735.47 cc

Cylinders Configuration - V8
Cooling System - Raw Water
Weight (lbs/kg) - 888.00 lbs / 402.79 kg
Charging System - 65 A
Length/width/height - 43 in / 30 in / 22 in
Full Throttle RPM - 4600

Jay, Once again, I'm very sorry to hear of your mother's passing, but it's good to see you still posting during this time... I've seen the outpouring of sympathy on your thread and it makes me smile to see our "i-boats family" gather round when one of us is in need.

Thanks for everything you've done to help me and the others on here. Your gift of videos and knowledge is invaluable!

Re: CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Cabin Cruiser Restoration (With Pics & Video!!!)

I got the measurements and constructed the travel leg of the gantry this morning. It's not assembled yet, but maybe this afternoon. I'm off to pick up the boy, get haircuts and then we have to pack for vacation, heading out for a week tomorrow morning. My soon to be bride, and I are taking our kids down to Disney and such, then spending a couple of days on the water in the Hernando beach area, where my buddy owns a house, and a 25ft. Center Console and the guy across the canal has a nice sailboat. We always spend a day or two aboard each floating around the gulf and catching fish and just enjoying the sun and the sea. :) Hopefully I'll get the gantry done, but depends on how much free time I have this afternoon and evening...
