ok this is not major major but fairly major. mercury 40 from 1980/81 I believe blueband.

I was sitting in my boat with muffs on idleing and I tapped the throttle, all ok. Turned engine off and was pretending to be going 60mph (speedboat) and put throttle all the way forward and I hard a clunk from the engine.

I got back and take a look. The arm that the throttle cable connects to has come off the engine. Its a long arm with a round bit in the middle containing a spring. The top bit connects to stator and carb throttle so its the main throttle bit. I think most mercs have this anyway.
I remove it and turns out the bolt had no threads to dig into. There is a hole in the side of my engine with little shards of metal and no threads.

What do I do? Should I put some Locktite type stuff on, the 2 part stuff and put all back together so bolt is stuck in place and throttle can move or what?
Budget is small so don't want to be buying helicoil kits really.

Here in the states we have a systemthat is called heli-coiling which you drill the hole to size for the heli-coil tap retap the hole and a heli-coil insert screws into it putting it back to the original size, don't know if it's available on your side of the pond.

I already mentioned that in the first post. Expensive buying all the different bits as I dont have tap set and I dont have any heli coil bits either.

could someone tell me though, what size is the bolt??

On mercruiserparts.com this is what it says.

24 10-818165 SCREW 10-55337 THROTTLE CONTROL LEVER TO CYLINDER BLOCK (1-3/4")

Does that mean the bolt is 1 -3/4"

You can measure the bolt you have for length and thread. It is going to be an american thread, like 1/4 20, or 10-24.

If you can't afford a heli-coil kit, you can't afford a gallon of gas to put in the engine. Use a rubber band to put tension on the throttle cable, and go back to pretending you're racing.

hope it helps

A helicoil kits costs ?30 on ebay here let alone in shops etc which is 5 gallons of gas.

I would rather go for the fixing the bolt in option. Chemically welding it in. Using some sort of special glue that is heat resistant.
