clunk while cruising

I had to pull the lower unit to replace the seals, and water pump. I put the lower unit back on, and adjusted the shift cables per the Joe Reeves method. note: The shift rod was much higher than spec when I pulled the LU. I put it back on per spec height. Before pulling the LU, it would shift ever so easily into forward and reverse with no apparent issues. Now it seems that I have to push the shift lever quite a bit further forward to get into gear (so the RPMS are higher too). This causes a minor clunk. My main concern is that I have felt clunks when cruising. The first time I felt it, I thought I had hit something submerged.

What's the diagnosis?

Thanks!

Re: clunk while cruising

are you measuring from the side of the lower to the center of the hole in shift rod, sounds mis-adjusted.

Here in Florida when you hear a clunk while cruising it usually means you hit a Manatee.
Sorry just a thought I had when I read the title.

Re: clunk while cruising

just an update --- I don't think had the trunion adjusted to pull the shifter far enough forward. I readjusted the cable, and tested this AM. Shifts perfectly -- forward - neutral -- reverse ......no clunks while in motion. perfect.

Thanks,
