Coil wires

Ok, so i changed coils yet again on my 3.7 mercruiser due to the fact that it was only generating spark one time around, then it would quit. Now when i put the new one on, i noticed it was doing the same thing as before, stalling. When i was checking the wires, i had noticed that there were a couple of wires that were pretty hot to the touch, what could be causing this? I did notice that there was a spot on these wires that had bare wires showing, not much but they were bare. Could this have been the cause of my problems from before? The coil i was using had an output of 45,000 volts and the new one has an outputt of 55,000 volts....Any thoughts??

Re: Coil wires

What wires are you talking about, like I said in your other post, the resistor wire does not protect the coil, only the points. You really need to explain in detail what wires are bare and what wires are hot. Pictures work wonders,

Re: Coil wires

Well, i already replaced the wires in question so, knock on wood, ill just have to wait and see if it still happens, thanks Don.

What wires ????? There are all kinds of wires all over that engine?

If the wire you replaced is the resistor wire, and you put a 'normal' wire in, then you will fry the points, quickly....

A photo or more details are needed....

Re: Coil wires

Ok, when you say "normal wire", what exactly are you meaning, i replaced them with a stranded wire, meaning two wires that go to the positive terminal on the coil? I converted the points over to electronic so theres no worrk about frying them points...I did this and so far so good, no problems as of yet. Ill keep you posted this weekend when i take her out in the bay for a significant ride...

And there it is!!! Unless you tell us what's been modified we can only assume the engine is 'factory standard'... The advise I gave was for a factory standard, unmodified engine (which has points and a resistive wire in the circuit).... because you didn't tell us otherwise.....

Umm, maybe you ought to take a look at the thread one more time. As it states above "I converted the points over to electronic...NEVER assume anything Chris....

Re: Coil wires

Actually op, you don't mention an electronic conversion. And you may fry your electronic ignition instead of your points if you bypassed the resistor wire. Depends on the system.

Yes, you're quite right... I had forgotten my crystal ball that day and because we weren't told you had modified the engine, I assumed it was standard...

My bad...

Re: Coil wires

What was your 3.7 doing when it would stall was it on top end 2500-3000 rpm or low toms I think im having the exact same problem

Boy, some people on here REALLY need to take the time to read the entire post. Re: Coil wires

Hi bertramsf. What it was doing was it would start, but right after that it would just stall out. I pulled the spark plug wires and noticed that the coil was giving out real good spark one time around, just enough to start for a split second, then it would quit. What i did was replaced the wires that go from the positive terminal on the coil all the way up to the choke assembly, and i also replaced the coil. What i was using before was a standard 45,00 volt mercruiser coil. I replaced it with an aftermarket mallory pro master coil that produces 56,000 volts. What happens with them old style oil filled coils is if they have a crack in it somewhere, it is designed to get the coil wire wet and prevent it from getting spark, just like a spark plug would...I did this and it starts right up, even without touching the throttle and runs like a champ

Eric,

You didn't mention the conversion of points to electronic until the sixth post... This is what people are on about... Had you mentioned it in the FIRST post all this confusion would have been avoided....

'Normal' wire, as opposed to resistance wire.... Whether you use stranded or solid, if it's resistance isn't more than about 1ohm per kilometre, it's normal wire....

I am so over this thread.......

:facepalm:Actually, if you can count, i did this on my 3rd post.....Geezuussss...I am soo over retards. The bottom line is I got it all figured out. Why is it some people go out of their way to look for conflict....

Not sure how you live with yourself then. It was the sixth post in this thread, not your sixth post. And my point is still valid, you can still fry an electronic ignition using the wrong wire. But I'm with Chris on this one...
