An oil spill in the Yellowstone River!! http://billingsgazette.com/special-section/news/oil-spill/
Good grief

I am so jaded about such news it turns me red.....Have you ever noticed when oil drops or a huge drop in the market a major upset.... there's always some big event that turns up...It never fails. As we speak there finally is a huge push to tap the Bakken oil formation a real concentrated effort a move towards independence and then of all the places in the world....Probably one of the most pristine and right in the backyard of the enviromental community this happens.

And once again it will start a huge controversy and overshadow progress.

Exxon didn't do this. Stuff happens. Believe me, at 100 dollars a barrel, they want the profits, not the cleanup. This isn't a big deal. Between 1500 and 3800 barrels of oil a day seep into the Gulf of Mexico through natural seepage. This is a one time thing. Oil is a natural substance created by nature. It will not damage nature in the long run.

They got the flow shut off fairly quickly, which should hasten cleanup. Might be a small spill by Gulf standards, but it is a big deal in Montana, and definitely bad publicity for the oil biz and those of us advocating increased domestic production.

Just one more excuse to bash and demonize EXXON. I agree with WITF.

Maybe Stuff Happens, Deal with It would be a more appropriate title?

There is only about 200,000 miles of petroleum pipelines, in the U.S., some nearly 70 years old. You'd think they would keep the spill rate a litle better. ;)

Based on talking to our local emergency services chief officer, this is really not that big of a deal, I live in Montana and as things go, it is really not that large of a spill and will be cleaned up pretty quickly.. By all estimates, 2 stroke boat motors dump more oil in the waters in this state in a month during the summer than the total that was spilled by this broken pipe..

I am not happy about a spill, but it does need to be kept in perspective..

Re: Come on Exxon!!

Exxon employees closed the line for fear of failure. Management reopened the line after meeting. Tens of thousands of gallons spilled with an estimated 42,000 gallons entering the river and effects registered up to 100 miles downstream. Exxons decision based on " low risk of failure". I do not think profit was the primary factor since this represents a mere pittance of company revenue. Just a poor decision by the unsoiled.
