Re: Common problems with 87 OMC 3.0L 140hp?
There are no inherant problems with the older 3.0L engines.
If you just got the boat and have no idea what maintenance has been done on it, treat it like it has never been cared for. Change the impeller, then the gear lube, pull the drive check for water or oil in the bellows, check the ujoints and gimbal bearing for roughness, check the alignment and grease the splines, lube all zirks, pull the prop and grease the shaft, change the engine oil and filter, change the fuel filters, check the belts make sure they are tight and the pulleys aren't rusty, and give the engine a good tune up, after new points, check the dwell, check the timing check the advance timing, adjust the carb idle mixture, and set the idle rpm. BTW, if you don't have a service manual, you can't do any of it correctly.
Don't forget when you run it, you have to have muffs on the drive for cooling water.
That covers a few of the most important items you need to check before you head to the water.
