Common problems with 87 OMC 3.0L 140hp?

Once I get into the diagnosis of the "knocking" the previous owner heard (previous posting), are there "usual" problems that occur with this combo?<br />Also would it be best, seeing how I don't know this boat, to replace the impeller on the outdrive while getting the boat ready for service?<br />First question is probably most important.<br />Thanks!

There are no inherant problems with the older 3.0L engines.<br />If you just got the boat and have no idea what maintenance has been done on it, treat it like it has never been cared for. Change the impeller, then the gear lube, pull the drive check for water or oil in the bellows, check the ujoints and gimbal bearing for roughness, check the alignment and grease the splines, lube all zirks, pull the prop and grease the shaft, change the engine oil and filter, change the fuel filters, check the belts make sure they are tight and the pulleys aren't rusty, and give the engine a good tune up, after new points, check the dwell, check the timing check the advance timing, adjust the carb idle mixture, and set the idle rpm. BTW, if you don't have a service manual, you can't do any of it correctly.<br />Don't forget when you run it, you have to have muffs on the drive for cooling water.<br />That covers a few of the most important items you need to check before you head to the water.

Thanks! Yea I bought it with the outdrive off and the previous owner said it had a knock. I was just reading about the gimble greasing.<br />So I have a lot to look forward to. I noticed that someone mentioned "cutting the filter" sounds sensible to me.<br />Any thoughts?

Yea I got a service manual with it. I don't know how people can afford boats or cars if they don't know how to work on them.

Well storms came through last night and tore down the progress that I made on above ground pool (higher priority than boat). <br />Couldn't get enough help to finish pool before storm so I'm that much farther behind on checking out boat. Will keep updated.
