Looks pretty good Tim. All the compression readings are close to each other. How does the engine run now?

If you're paying a bunch of money, you should insist on seeing it and hearing it run, preferably on a boat on the water.

It is at a marine center that specializes in used motors. Not that that means anything! But it looks good in the pics he sent and they are asking $3900 for it. I am sure they can make it run for me but I was going to buy it with a condition of a sea test once it is one my boat. Do you think thats a fair price and agreement?

Tim

I can't say about the price, since I don't follow prices on larger outboards. Don't rely on a verbal agreement regarding it running on your boat, however. Insist on a written agreement that you can return the motor for a refund or repair if it does not perform properly on your boat.

How far away from you is this marine center? Is your boat already set up for this outboard? If not, you might want to consider having the marine center install and set up the engine as part of the purchase price, then test it on the water at their location. Any problems should be taken care of before you take delivery.

Anytime you're spending close to $4K on an outboard, I'd want to make very sure that it is going to run properly before handing over the bucks.

It's not that I don't trust your dealer...it's just common sense to make certain that things are done right and that you're satisfied with both the outboard and the installation.

Re: Compression #'s ??

The dealer is only about 2 miles from my shop so it is close. I was hoping if everything looked good to have a written agreement about the operation and seatest. Also, I was going to trade in my 175 Evinrude in exchange for them rigging the outboard. I just hope my hydralic steering works with the new motor.

Tim
