Confused: Starter / Flywheel combo

I need to replace the bendix gear / drive gear on my 1981 Johnson 60HP 2 Cylinder J60ELCIA

I will be replacing the whole starter since I can't find a place with the gear in stock.

The current starter has 10 teeth??? But all of the replacement models for my engine only have 9 teeth.

Is there a possiblity that the previous owner of this engine put a different flywheel on? Or did they just shrink the gear and removed a tooth?

I've noticed that most larger outboards have 10 teeth and some smaller, but none in the 60HP range. They all have 9 teeth.


Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Due to my time table I don't want to make a mistake by ordering the wrong part.

which starter do you have prestolite or bosch. go here and look up part #'s you can then go to ishopmarine enter number and it will give you an updated number http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/Accessories/Literature/

Looks like the bosch since mine has a spring spacer and top nut. From what I can see on evinrude both starters have a reference number of 0389275 which translates to (Sierra I believe) 18-5630, but that is a 9 tooth starter.

Duh!

Do you count the actual point or the space for each tooth? I counted the picture of the replacement and got 10 points and 9 spaces. Same result on my old starter????

Got my new starter today and as I suspected. The old starter has 10 teeth the new one has 9.

I matched up the part numbers and cross referenced them.

Evinrude.com said 389275 for my 1981 2 cylinder 60HP. So that turned into 18-6530 Sierra part number.

The old gear on the starter is larger and has 10 teeth the new starter has 9. I checked the clearance for the space between the gears with the flywheel and it looks like it will match.

I am going to mount the starter and manually raise the gear with my fingers to see how it makes contact with the flywheel before I try turning it over.

Should I run into any problems? I'm really confused since I matched up my motor's serial number on Evinrude.com and cross referenced the part number on several sites to make sure I got the starter. Including iboats and ishopmarine.

I ended up buying the starter from West Marine because people buy me gift cards from there.

Anyone every have this problem?

I would assume this would make the engine crank a fraction slower and the starter shouldnt be working quite as hard. Maybee this was done for lower battery voltage required for starting...... Other than that I wouldn't think there would be any real differences.

Or maybe the new starter turns at a higher RPM than the old one....

The starter I got from West Marine and the drive / bendix gear is too small.

The box says 18-5630 replaces 389275 & 585063

But the body of the starter say s 586283 I put this number in google and it says its for a V4 not a 60HP 2 Cylinder.

Did they send me the wrong starter????

I have to call them.
