Heres a recap of my problem from another post:

"I was running WOT. Ran great as usual. All of a sudden, it dropped about 20% or so RPM. It was sudden and smooth, in fact I looked to see if my dog had knocked the throttle control back. It had not moved. It ran very smooth, no sputtering, no odd sound, just lower RPM and slower speed. I backed it down some, then put it back up, still maxed at the lower speed. Next day drove it to ramp. Still not full power. In no wake zone, it would occassionally "surge" up RPMs for a few seconds. then back down.
Starts instantly, idles and runs smooth,

Here is what I have done so far based on advice from here:

1) Checked spark. Initial test no good. I recharged battery to full and tested again. Using spark gap tester, all 4 sparked strong at 7/16th.
2) Pulled plugs. One looked a little worn on the end. They all were a bit oily and black, prob due to recent idleing. I went ahead and replaced all plugs.
3) Checked all plug wires and connections.
4) Inspected wiring for loose ground or other loose connector. All looked in order.
5) Cleaned carbs using carb cleaner (while engine running) according to directions.
6) Today on sea test when it was full throttle, i pumped the bulb. No change.

Im still thinking electrical but am stumped at what I should do next.
Any ideas?

carb cleaner has a hard time getting dirt out of the jets, best way is to disassemble and clean.

I agree but based on earlier posts I am thinking the problem may be electrical

It passed the spark gap test.

I think you'd rather work on electrical stuff than rebuild the carbs.:p
You can get the carb rebuild kits right here on iBoats.

Spark OK, don't know about compression, pull carb drain plugs, remove high speed jets and check for blockage. You can check jets without removing carbs.

Here;s an update
I pulled the carbs and cleaned and used rebuild kit. Looks like a pretty good blockage on the high speed jet. I could barely see through. Gave it all a good bath, replaced the seat, valve and float. Cleaned everything with cleaner and compressed air.

Also noticed when I pulled the carbs 1 of the mounting screws was not real tight.

I'm hoping I got it. Going to put it all back together in the morning.

I had the same problem on my 1989 88SPL. Tried everything including rebuilding carbs, new spark plugs and wires, new power pack, etc. The last thing I checked were the coils. One of the coils I pulled out had some corrosion on the power pack input terminal (the small terminal). I tested it on the meter according to the procedure in the manual and it was bad!! I replaced it and never had a problem again. Your symptoms sound exactly like the ones I had. Let me know if this works.

:D Oh my, Zman. I sure hope I dont have that problem! I out her all together and she started in the driveway. Going in an hour to launch for sea trial.

Wish me luck!

I would bring a timing light.l Iv'e been chasing what I thought was fuel related problem for 2 weeks and just found out this weekend it's ignition problems. No spark on 3 cylinders when it happens. Also there may be a tan lead temp sensor which limits the rpms to 2500 if it thinks your over heating.

Good luck, make sure you run it for a while on the lake to see if the problem shows up again. The coils are very easy and cheap to replace. Just one bolt and two plug in wires per coil. Shouldn't take you more than a half hour to replace all of them.

Well, it appears it was fuel. Cleaned carbs and new fuel pump for good measure. Running better than before and here's a pic.

Thanks to all who responded to my thread. I really appreciate the advice!!!
