Hi all,

So I did quite a lot of research on this and found there two threads:

http://www.screamandfly.com/showthre...6-bubble-back/
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=258737&page=1

The first thread was completely detrailed by everyone feeding the troll, who kept coming back fore more. The second one was a little more informative.

I have an Evinrude 115hp (1978. Model 115893C)

All in all, ive picked up that I can upgrade by 115 to a 140 by:

- Replacing the 'flat back' exhaust cover, manifold and filler blocks with the 'bubble back' cover (and corresponding manifold and filler blocks)
- Replacing the stock carbs with the 140hp (larger) carbs
- The exhaust tuner (the megaphone/horn) does not need to be modified, but can be. No real benefit if you do
- There are some minor modifications required

Now, my questions are:

1) What modifications are required?

Im a fairly competant hobbyist having successfully rebuilt motorbike and outboard 2. strokes for over 10 years. However, I dont know some of the terms used in the industry (eg. milling, welding bosses etc...), so some explanations may be necessary

2) Does anyone have pictures of the modifications needed? I spoke to my local wrecker and he believes its a simple 'bolt-on' solution, which is what I am hoping for

3) Would this modification and increase in power put too much additional pressure on the lower unit? I am assuming not, because the rest of the parts are interchangeable between the 115 and the 140

4) Finally, I have already ordered the bubble back cover (p/n 0323319), the manifold (p/n 0323468), 2 filler blocks (p/n 0322684) and the 2 carbys from my local wrecker. Im not sure if its those part numbers he is giving me, but those are the ones I found on boats.net.
I have also ordered the exhaust gaskets (2 of them) and 2 complete carby rebuild kits including floats and needles ($32/ea thanks ebay!)

5) I read somewhere that the thermostats need to be changed, however, I cannot find the thermostats in the parts list at all! Does this engine even HAVE a thermostat?? If so, can someone give me the part number and how many I need?

Is there anything else I am missing? Anything more I need?

Thank you in advance

those updates will help, you will need to rejet your carbs accordingly. I *think* that the 140 may have had some more aggressive port timing as well, if you want to exactly match it you will need to strip the engine down completely and modify the intake and exhaust ports.

Thanks for your help.

Levi, a wrecker is what us Aussies call a spare parts shop. Where they tear apart old cars/boats and sell the parts.

Blimp, im buying a set of carbs directly off a 140. So im hoping I wont need to rejet anything.
As for timing, I have a timing light and the service manual for the Evinrudes. Would I be able to simply time it according to the 140hp specs?

The port timing is determined by the shape (height) of the ports in the cylinder walls. The carbs/exhaust/filler blocks will help, but it won't be a factory spec 140 without the port being machined. Not exactly worth it, IMHO, but if you need to tear it down in the future, might as well port it out. A good machine shop can get the specs and port it correctly, they have to do that when they re-sleeve a cyl.

oh, and thanks for the thermostat part number. I put an order through. Ill change those while im at it.
As for your other question, I dont want to buy a 140 if i can just upgrade my perfectly fine 115 for a few hundred $$ :) plus its a little project for me. I have, the room and the tools. So I may aswell. Im just a little concerned about getting it machines for the manifold/cover. I hope I can get away with doing it without having to remove the powerhead.

Hi all,

I read in another forum ( http://www.screamandfly.com/showthread.php?192347-90-140-v4-cross-flow-blocks/page3 ) that if I dont put in the exhaust fillers I wont need to machine the block for the bubble back conversion. Has anyone heard of this? What are the repercussions of not putting in the fillers?

I want to avoid machining the block at all cost because I dont want to remove the powerhead. The top end was rebuilt only a couple of years ago and I am getting a good ~125psi per cylinder.
