Convert to double controls

I have an OMC Cobra. Ok, everyone knows they can be a bit troublesome with the shift control. How about taking the single lever shift control out and installing a double. My thought is you can positively shift into gear with no throttle interference and then be able to keep it there because that lever would stay down unless going back to neutral. Also, having an independent throttle control would allow for a few RPM's in order to maybe start easier or even for a warm up.

What does anyone think about this idea? Pros/Cons

Why not? A lot of Fountain-type boats use them exclusively. Just need to make sure it has a Neutral switch. And mind how you operate it. :)

You obviously haven't looked at how the single lever controls work, and by changing to a dual lever will not cure any problems of how the shifter is adjusted. There is also a neutral only option on every control I have ever seen. It disengages the shifter and only allows throttle control. Ther is either a button some place or the lever pulls outward when in neutral so you can move for throttle only.

Don,

I have not had time to get back to the cables yet, but in the mean time had been thinking about this. I am going to get my csbling fixed one way or another in its standard configuration, just brainstorming. Also makes since about the shift adjustment.

Thats interesting about the neutral only on thr shifter. I have never noticed that on mine, probably cause I never looked for it. You've got my curiosity peaked now. Going out to shop right now to look at it.

UMMMMM..........DON,....about that neutral lockout....yep just like you said, it pulls out to provide full throttle. D*mn, never knew that was there, guess that shows how green I am.

Man, This means that I wont have to call my brother-in-law over anymore to work the butterflys on the carb while I crank!!

(just kiddin anyhow, I fixed the startup problem with a carb rebuild)
