2000 Johnson 40 (J40PLSSM) I want to replace the VRO oil/fuel pump with a standard fuel pump. I've seen this mentioned quite a few times, and now 2 different local outboard mechanics have also recommended it.

Is there a good "how to" guide to this?

It's pretty straightforward. I did it last year, and bought my kit from this outfit:

https://www.offshoremarineparts.com/62-13-024.html

It came with instructions. Make sure you get the correct-sized pump for your motor, and don't forget to pre-mix your fuel/oil moving forward.

There will be other here to tell you where to get the pump cheaper probably.

You should not need that pump. Get the pump off of a 48 hp motor and use the mounting holes in the block. Just make sure you plug the VRO pump pulse pump port.

Agreed use the pump off the 48 hp models.------Mounts directly over the pulse port on the side off the #1 cylinder.-----Plug the hole for the pulse limiter for the VRO.

Is there a year range for that 48hp that will lead me to the correct parts list, for the pump part number?

Stop-----I do not see a 2000 model 48 on the list.--------The 48 HP specials are the same basic motor as yours.----The 48 HP specials did not leave the factory with oil injection !!-----So look it up for any 48 HP model year for the pump # try 1995 model year.

Thanks. I arrived at the same spot by searching for "fuel pump 48hp Johnson".
1996 looks like the last year for that motor.

This might be a stupid follow-up question but why are there 3 nipples on that pump when all it's moving is gas and the vac line is on the back?

The factory 48 HP fuel pump uses 2 nipples !!-----It is mounted directly over the pressure port.

But the part number for a 48 is 0438557 and has 3 nipples + rear pulse port.

Hose #22 in the diagram is called out as a pulse line. Maybe the rear cylinder port serves some other function?

Edit: Won't accept upload.

What does a 94 model show ?----Do you have the pulse port on the #1 cylinder that now has a plug in it ?

I can assume the 95+ 3-port pump is a universal pump that can be used on 94 and older by capping the pulse nipple. I'd rather hear that from one of you experts than to just assume.

Can you answer the question in post #11-----These pumps / systems are very simple but ???----If you understand how these things work it is very simple , sorry to be so blunt.

I have what I assume to be a pulse port over the cylinder. There are 2 tapped mountings with a plug in between. Remember--I'm the inexperienced one here.

I haven't heard if it matters which pump I choose since they both have a gasketed pulse port on the back.

You would use the pump with a fuel in and fuel out nipple.-----Remove that plug between the screw holes-----Install some hoses.--------Mount the pump with the gasket.----Plug the VRO pulse port.-----The 3 nipple pump mounts with the gasket but the pulse port at the back of the pump is NOT drilled through to the diaphragm !!!------You motor will be more powerful with the 2 nipple pump !

I did this conversion a number of years back on my 1990 40hp Evinrude. I'm guessing your 2000 model may be similar.

On my 40hp the mounting bosses for the traditional type pump were present and tapped (I think), but the pulse port between the bosses into the block was not machined. I replaced the VRO pump with a three hose standard pump (not sure of the p/n). This type pump also did not have a port machined in the rear of the pump body, therefore no gasket necessary.

Installing this pump, the fuel lines went to their obvious connections and the pulse line went to the pulse limiter valve. If I recall the valve was located in the lower area of the front of the motor.

This is what worked for me...

Edit: Apparently, as you stated, you have a removable plug between the mounting bosses. This being the case, I think you could go either way with a two or three hose pump.

Ok that's much clearer now. Thank you both.
I'll get the 2-hose pump for simplicity.

I'm appalled that the 3-hose pump that includes a mounting gasket just like the 2-hose pump (in most photos), has a non-functioning rear pulse port.
This tidbit wasn't mentioned in any of the ads I saw.
