Converting from Duel Fuel Lines to Single on '56 Evin. Outboard

I've got an '56 Evinrude 5.5hp Fisherman Outboard. It runs excellant except, the fuel connection at the motor leaks, the o-rings in the fitting on the end of the hose appear to be worn out. I've price them and they're very expensive, like $56 for one! I've tried to replace the o-rings in it but they just don't fit right and still leak. What will I need to convert this over to a single fuel line setup? I'm guessing an external mounted, vacuum operated fuel pump. I don't have a clue where to hook it up, thought? Has anybody done this before? Thanks.

Me thinks your have a pressure system not vacume. Take the fittings to a automotive parts store that has a wide selection of o-rings and get them to fit them for you....

Hello.
Call 585-323-1010,Maier's marina and ask for Bill Maier. You can send your old fuel hookup unit to him and he will send you another refurbished one for under 20 box if you are nice to him.
The original o-rings are a weird size and hard to find.
In the Seloc manual for engines up to 40 horse from 1956 to 1970 there is a very good explanation about how to change to a single line system.
You should get hold of a copy and photo copy it or just buy the book.It is very pleasant reading.
About three months ago I posted a precise explanation about how to do the change, you can find it in the search.
good luck.

It's a pressurized system, with the gas tank being pressurized. One line fuel, one line air.

Would you know what the title of the post is?

I did a search and it doesn't seem to come up.

Okay, here's what I'm thinking. Normally, the engine pressizes the fuel tank, causing fuel to travel up the fuel hose to the carburetor. I'm not sure, but I think there is a reed valve behind the port that the "air" line connects to.

What I have to do is remove the reed valve and put her back together. Then install an externally mounted, vacuum operated fuel pump somewhere on the powerhead, kind of like what is used on a snowmobile. To give you an idea of what I'm talking about check this out, http://www.denniskirk.com/powervendor/details/detail.asp?serverid=nlSnow&PartNo=1609
Thanks again.
Chris

The fuel tank for that engine has a vacumn operated fuel pump in the tank, the diaphram pn is
302563.

I used a common OMC fuel pump. Easy to get parts for. I also replaced the o-rings, but don't remember them being that expensive.....

Where is the pulse line connected? And can you give me some more information on the pump in the picture, so I know what ask for when I go to the marina?
Also, I'm a little confused as to where to hook up the impulse line. I read something about drilling a hole in the crank case and putting a nipple in the hole, that just scares me. The motor runs great now, I don't want to screw things up.

Bare in mind, the pump in the picture will not "bolt on". You must make a bracket. As far as the pulse line goes.....try blowing and sucking on the original pulse line (remove it from the fitting on the engine) If you can blow back through it, you can use the original line as is.

The pump I used is off of a 9.9 evinrude 1983. You may find it easier to mount the jobber one shown below.......
Re: Converting from Duel Fuel Lines to Single on '56 Evin. Outboard

I have the one in the last picture posted, the port in the center is the pulse line and the other are Fuel In and Fuel Out, so I know how that one works.

The one from the 9.9 evinrude 1983, How does that one work? Is the pulse line on the back side of the pump, out of view? And the other two are Fuel In and Fuel Out.

The reason I'm asking, is that I have a '64 Montgomery Wards Sea King, 5hp, and under the hood is veritually the same engine as my '56 Evin., 5.5hp, only it has an external mounted fuel pump, in pretty much the same place as the one shown in your picture of the motor. The way that one is setup, is there is a gasket on the backside of the fuel pump and it bolts directly to the engine for it's pulse.

thats correct. The back side of the pump is the pulse port. The steel tubing you see is actually brazed to the rear of the bracket. There is a gasket between........

Where do you have the pulse line on the pump connected to on the engine? Sorry to ask so many questions, but I want to do this right.

Its been 20 years since I did the conversion.....but I believe I was able to use the original fitting that the pulse hose came from. You will find this fitting if you follow the hose that is connected to the coupler as shown by the red circle...The hose on this one is missing.....

Allright! Thanks for the picture. I'll try the conversion, I just have one more question and thats it, I promise.
I have a power head off an 85 evinrude, it's a 50hp, would you happen to know if the fuel pump off that work?

It should......monitor it closely to be sure it doesn't flood for you....pressure would be my only concern.

Thanks, for all you help. I think I'm going to opt for one that is made for a smaller motor.
