hello everyone my first post so let me first say thank you to everybody that posts great info here.
the motor in question is a 1973 johnson 115hp #115esl73m.
trying to get this sob to start, during my troubleshooting i found that the starter reads a short on the positive pole of starter to ground.is that normal?i wouldnt think so but not sure. when i bypass the solenoid which i believe is bad the starter engages and turns the motor over so maybe all is well.any ideas.
next issue is this:the ignition switch was broke so i replaced with new, but the person i got boat from told me the motor was a 1986,this is before i started to learn a little about these motors from you guys. unfortunately i had bought the new switch thinking it was an 86.the switch is for 1977- the only difference i see is that it has the push in function for the choke were as mine has a toggle. will this work ok if i hook up the same lettered terminals as original switch?
sorry for the long post but y'alls help is very much appreciated.Doug

It's normal to read thru the motor windings with an ohm meter.

That ignition switch will work fine. You can either run a wire from the "A" terminal of the switch (12v when the key is on) to the choke switch or connect the wire that leads to the choke solenoid directly to the "C" terminal of the switch. The "C" (choke) terminal has 12v applied to it when the key is pushed in.

thanks for the replys. so if i understand what your saying i "will" read continuity from the engine block to starter(+)? when the starter is good? seems to me that a short or continuity would be a bad thing.

Yep. You're just measuring the resistance of the armature windings which are very low. Looks like your solenoid is the problem.

Re: couple of electrical ?'s

i had a bad shock prob. on my 1975 70hp evin. it looks like it was a combination rectifier lead short but more of a key switch prob. after both fixed it had ran good for the last 5 outings...
good luck
