Court Restores Inmates' Voting Rights

SAN FRANCISCO — A state appeals court is restoring the voting rights of about 100,000 local jail inmates across the state who are serving a year or less for felony convictions.

The state said it would not appeal the decision from the 1st District Court of Appeal. The affected inmates were eligible to vote until last year, when the state disenfranchised them.

If a man has served his time and was found fit to be released back into society, got himself a job and pays his taxes, why should he not be allowed to vote?

That was always pretty much my take, but I figred ex-cons were also barred from voting, and also from posessing firearms. Jail isn't prison. ( Vlad has me rethinking the ex-con part. )

There are of felonies that allow for sentences of a year or less, technically "up to blank years". Misdemeanors are offenses of less than a year. Apparently California has determined the voting issue is based on sentence rather than offense. So in the end, it's a matter of one day. The most you can get for a misdemeanor is 364 days. California bumped it a day. Then again, their constiturion may allow that misdemeanors are punishable "up to one year". That would be a matter of semantics, but it still amounts to one day.

In NY, after release, convicted felons can vote. They cannot run for public office. Also, a convicted felon can obtain a Relief of Disabilities from a judge to restore most of his rights. This is usually done for DWI (Non-violent) felons so they can possess firearms to hunt.

I don't agree. If a person commits a felony, is convicted, he should lose certain rights, including the right to vote. He made a choice to act in an antisocial way, why on earth should he be allowed to enjoy social freedoms such as voting. Even non-violent felons should lose these rights. We are supposed to be preventing crime, not rewarding it.

Losing those rights whilst being incarcerated is understandable, however when one is released back into society, if an ex-felon act and behave in a lawful manner, work and pay their taxes like all good citizens should, why should their right to vote not be restored?

Perhaps taxation without representation in our democratic society ought to be subjective, or perhaps felons ought not ever be rehabilated and should be kept in prison for the remains of their life, or maybe they ought to be euthanized, afterall it will save society lots of money.

Vlad, wiser people than you and me long ago decided that it would be in society's best interest to bar felons from voting. Why is it that Liberals are now attempting to deconstruct all that had been learned throughout the history of mankind, while this society continues to crumble around them?
