Re: crack in lower unit

Cracks? Three possibilities: hitting a rock/obstruction underwater, water in the gearcase that freezes during winter and expanding the case, or total LU failure with mangled gears. Looks like first possibility to me. I'm not a welder, but that looks like an easy weld??

That's probably a risky weld because the system is too close to that area.

It looks like the drain has collected water and frozen, cracking it alone the line of the drain.

I think that I would drill the ends of the crack to keep it from spreading, clean out the drain and fill it with epoxy, maybe epoxy the outer surface, sand and paint. I doubt if the structural integrity of the drive is damaged.

i tried to jb weld but it cracked through that as well , i don't think it was because it hit something, i was thinking the frozen water idea myself. i don't know , i''l have to look for a different epoxy

Did you drill each end of the crack first ??

If you drop the gearcase and clean that drain out well and then fill the drain hole with epoxy, it will stabilize. Drill the ends of the crack first.
