What?s this I hear about CraigsList being a haven for POS boats that can?t be foisted off on the public through any other means?

I?m miffed by this. Are there other places where one can find for sale by owner boats of a higher quality sold by those of a higher moral fiber?

In other online publications like Boat Trader and Yacht Trader, 9 out of 10 ads are by dealers.

I didn?t realize Boat dealers were exactly paragons of virtue.

Where can one find private owner boat ads in vast numbers besides Craigslist?

Is there any reason why a seller with an inferior product would lean toward Craigslist anymore than his local newspaper or a for sale sign physically tacked on the boat in his driveway.

I would think Craigslist is just another outlet for sellers of all stripes?both honest and corrupt.

Am I wrong?

Re: Craigslist Synonymous W/POS???

There's lots of boats on craigslist that are fine, to me it's no different than cars. Sure, some people are just trying to get the hunk of fiberglass of their property, but others just honestly want to sell their boat, and craigslist is free classifieds, so why not?

It's not like you're buying it on craigslist, you can check it out in person before you buy.

I agree with you 100% about boat trader, I don't like any sort of dealer, used car/boat salespeople aren't necessarily any more ethical than someone on craigslist. Plus, nearly everything listed in Boat Trader was out of my budget.

People use craigslist because it's free and gets a lot of traffic. Why pay for an ad in the paper when you can post it there for free and have more people see it?

Re: Craigslist Synonymous W/POS???

I did quite a bit of shopping and used various sites. The boat I bought was found on Craigslist and I have no complaints whatsoever. Found the truck to tow the same place. Sold my Volvo there too after paying for an ad on Autotrader that got me zero calls.

You just have to know what your looking for and be leary of who you are dealing with. Maybe it's different other cities, but here in Columbus, OH I have had no problems.

You are correct, you can find nice boats on CL but they are far and few and are scooped up pretty quick. The ones that you see daily can also be great boat but with a high price tag, for some reason people think their boat is worth what they paid for it 15 years ago because they have not used it and will take off 250 for the vinyl being rotted away.

Most boats on CL in florida or at least jacksonville are neglected and need LOTS of work. If the boat is in decent shape the trailer is crap 95% of the time too. I bought my boat on CL for dirt cheap... but i checked the adds every few hrs. Now i have an awesome 15ft fisher aluminum boat with side console, 25hp electric start evinrude, and shore lander galvanized trailer for less than $600 invested.

Re: Craigslist Synonymous W/POS???

My boat came from CL.

I got it for free, but it needed alot of work to get it where she is now.

BUT, I knew that before getting into it.

I made a picture/ video of rebuilding it. Here is a link.

http://www.4shared.com/file/122755283/a64be221/JesseRae-_Boat.html

The preview on the site is crappy quality, and gets cut short.

If you hit the blue download button, then watch on windows media player or the like, it is MUCH better. Site is patrolled by Kapersky AV.

Yes you are.

It's like any other medium, due diligence is required by any purchaser.

Re: Craigslist Synonymous W/POS???

I love Craigslist. I have bought and sold numerous things on it but never a boat. My most expensive purchase was probably about $800 for a camper shell and I was very happy with it. My most expensive sale was about $8,000 for a truck I had. The guy I sold it too lives about 50 miles away and on more than one occasion dropped me an email to tell me how happy he was with it and invited me and my family to come see him and go fishing and cookout with his family - nice people. Just last weekend I bought a trailer hitch draw bar for $10. I have also had good luck on computer components, etc. Last but not least, I am unemployed right now and found a very well paying position that I am expecting an agreement letter by the end of the week:). You never know what you might find and you have perform your due diligence in all transactions - if it doesnt seem right, walk away.

Re: Craigslist Synonymous W/POS???

The fact that CL ads are FREE and require no investment whatsoever by the seller leads to there being many more ads for crappy boats (or any other type of merchandise) on CL than there are in other media that require the seller to pay for the ad. You just have to weed through them.

Seems that people are more likely to try to sell junk when it doesn't cost them anything to try. They won't risk $25 or so to put an ad in the paper or Boattrader because they know they'll just be throwing their money away. Imagine that.

Plenty of nice boats on craigslist in Middle Tennessee. My buddy has a great boat up there right now.

Every boat listed in my sig, except for the Old Town, was purchased on CL. Sure beats the **LL out of the local paper, Ebay or the Boat Trader.

Re: Craigslist Synonymous W/POS???

i have to ask.....is this post a sequel to "burden of ownership"? how many boats have you gone and looked at total, so far? i mean really looked at, like climbed in, looked around, started it up? im just trying to see where you are coming from here.

Re: Craigslist Synonymous W/POS???

One more thing, it's a good idea to check CL frequently, the good deals and quality boats can get picked up quick, especially in the SF Bay area where CL is very popular. If a "cheap" boat has been advertised for a while, there's a good chance it's too far gone to economically save

I see good deals on CL all the time, well, good deals to someone who can afford it. I got my boat on there and overall I'm happy with it. I also bought the replacement outdrive when my gears got fried. (Is that a bit of contradictory?)
