Re: Crestliner Sportfish Project

As usual, things didn't move along as fast as anticipated.

OMG isn't that the truth. EVERYTHING has taken longer than I thought on mine. We're gettin' there though! Your rear deck is a great size.

Re: Crestliner Sportfish Project

If I could only get the paint I'm using for sealing the boards to dry faster, I think I could have this thing done in no time. The prepping of the boards is what really seems to eat up the time. Painting the boards has been basically a five day process...

paint side 1, let dry over night (day one)
flip board, paint side 2, let dry over night (day two)
flip board apply second coat on side 1 (day three)
flip board apply second coat on side 2 (day four)
board ready (day five)

In fact, I just got in from applying the first coat on the boards above. Usually, I don't work on the boat on Sunday evening, but time's a wasting. I saw boats out today walleye fishing by a dam near my house. So, the season has officially started.

Re: Crestliner Sportfish Project

Made some more nice progress this weekend. As planned I more or less finished off the rear casting deck. I still need to do some tweaks on the rear desk but the important stuff is done.

I also bought some new seat pads this past week. The boat originally came with four Tempress seats. As like everything else on this boat, the pads were absolutly shot. However, the plastic seat frames still had some potential. Fortunatly, Tempress sells replacement pads for this style of seat. However, the choices are limited to just a few colors for the low back type seat. After researching the matter I convinced myself that I must have the low back type frame. Sure enough, the pads were delivered and didn't fit right. After contemplating my options, I decided cutting the frames down to fit the pads was my only option. So I took my jigsaw to the seat frames and trimmed off about an inch off the top. It worked fine, I don't think anyone would be the wiser. The color of the seats look sort of white in the attached image, however, they are a nice light gray that will go well with my color scheme. The frames are somewhat washed out from the elements, I may have to hit them with a coat of paint. Overall, I'm quite satisfied with the seats and think they will work out well.

Finishing the rear deck was basically the end of the structural repairs. Everything remaining (except for mounting the motor etc.) is pretty much cosmetic. Hopefully, in the next week or so I can finish off the various interior details, then it's time to paint the hull and finish this seemingly never ending project.

Can you come do my rear deck now? Your skill with the carpet is clearly improving. Looks fantastic. Those seat covers look great! I have to admit I thought the plain plastic seats looked real cheapy without them but look great now.

EZ - Thanks for the nice comments. Previously, I was just using the plastic frames more or less as props in order to get a feel for what the boat would look like. After seeing the Tempress seats on a few other Crestliners, I decided to put the existing seats back into action. The price was right too. It cost $100 for the two sets of pads. Comparable seats would have put me back at least twice as much.

This weekend was spent getting the console finished off. I gave both sides a quick coat of light gray Rustoleum. I also painted the meter mounting plate and the control knobs with some Duplicolor auto paint. A new kill switch was also installed. I'm pleased with the results. The steering wheel may eventually need some attention. I'm not too concerned about it right now. Maybe I'll paint the grip area eventually.

I'm hoping after next weekend, I'll be ready to move on to the hull.

Re: Crestliner Sportfish Project

I've done quite a bit of minor interior detail work on the Crestliner over the past few weeks and I'd say the interior is about 95% complete now. I started working on the hull this weekend, if I can manage my time right, I'm hoping to possibly paint it next weekend.

However, today I finally got around to doing what I've been putting off for a while... getting my old Sea Nymph ready to sell. It actually was a pretty good rig and it cleaned up nicely. Hopefully, it will go quickly... one less thing to complicate my life.

McGR,
Good luck on the sale of the Sea Nymph. I hope it goes quick for you. It looks like a pretty good rig too.
Good luck

Thanks Bob. I posted it on Craigslist this evening. I've already had an offer to trade it for a crotch-rocket motorcycle (no thanks).

I just found your ad. Raise your price to $4k - 4500. Insert your imageshack pictures right into your ad. You're lowballing yourself. PM me if you need help. Seriously. I too lowballed myself and took the advice of a fellow iboater and got a good bit more than I was hoping to get when I sold my Jupiter.

Re: Crestliner Sportfish Project

Major milestone yesterday... I finally started painting the hull. I used Rustoleum satin white topside paint. Based on recommendations here, I used a small foam roller for applying the paint. The small roller really worked well. I didn't "tip" this part of the hull. In fact, I didn't want this part of the hull too shiny, as it would expose flaws (dings) in the aluminum. I think I made the right call. I'm very satisfied with the overall look of this paint.

I didn't paint the entire bottom of the hull, just the sides. Nonetheless, the Rustoleum white matches remarkably well with the OEM paint still on the hull. I think it looks fine.

I'm hoping to do the top portion later. This will be painted using Rustoleum topside navy blue. I'll probably tip this section, as it is a gloss paint. Anyway... hopefully more pics later after painting the remainder.

She's about 95% painted now. Overall, it looks pretty decent, though the camera did a fairly good job of hiding some of the dings in the hull. I'm pretty happy with the Rustoleum, it did good.

I'm hoping to pretty well have it finished off this weekend. Hopefully, we'll be fishing next weekend.

WOW, that looks fantastic!

That color of blue is much better than what the boat came with, good choice!

Thanks Dan - Yea that 90's teal blue had to go...

The boat came out looking decent, though certainly not perfect. Painting the hull has really made the overall color scheme come together. Early in the project, I lined the hull with navy carpet. When I added the gray Nautolex and carpet, I was thinking that it was looking a little odd. The blue on the hull has really pulled it all together.

By the way, early on you recommended getting rope for the rub rail from Lowe's. I don't have a Lowe's very close to me, so I checked a few other places and the Web. The other places didn't have what I needed, and the online places wanted big $ for the rope. Eventually, I took your advise and took a ride over to the closest Lowe's store. I thought they may not have the same stuff you used, however they did - and it looks great. Thanks for the good tip, the Lowe's rope really worked out nicely.

LOL, now that I look closer at the pic, I see the black woven rope, magnificent choice, if I do say so myself :D

Try this, scroll between the last old paint pic and the first new paint pic. It's really unbelievable how much that dark blue adds to the boat.
