Re: Crestliner Sportfish Project

Thanks for the nice comments guys.

Kenny, the reason I used the rope is because that is what Crestliner originally had on the boat. However, (like everything else on this rig) the original rope was shot and all tattered at the ends. So, I needed to replace the beat up original rope.

Just so you know... To install one of these rope type rub-rails, you need the extruded type plastic rails specifically with a channel for the rope. I think I've seen these type rails commercially available. I just want to make sure you realize that it wasn't just a matter of screwing some rope to the edge of the boat. Perhaps you knew this already... but if you didn't, now you do.

Re: Crestliner Sportfish Project

I'm going to sell my Sea Nymph in a few minutes. I'm to meet the buyer at a local lake for a test run. If everything checks out OK, the deal is done... there better not be any surprises. When all is said and done, I will have recouped most of what I paid for the Crestliner. Hopefully when I come hope with cash in hand, I'll finally get out of the doghouse for buying my project boat. Though I am going to stop at Bass Pro Shops for a few things on my way home... $2800 should buy me a lot of nice boat stuff.

Another major milestone... the motor is back on... spent this morning rebuilding the carbs..then reconnected the electrical and fuel. Just got done installing a water pump and shaft seals. I'm tired... I'm taking a nap.

You have done a great job. If my boat turns out as nice as yours I'll be pretty pleased. So how many livewells, storage boxes etc. did you finally end up with?

Phantom - thanks for the nice comments. The camera is very forgiving and does a good job of hiding the flaws (particularly in the hull). I look forward to seeing your project progress.

Well, just in case McGR checks in after 4-5 months of fishing, how about a ride report? I am impressed with the ride my 1750 sportfish provides (after dropping some nice coin for a remanufactured powerhead ) Any thoughts on the sheet insulation vs. speculation of what the original would have been like? I'm afraid to test mine for water.

Re: Crestliner Sportfish Project

PM - I've had the boat out numerous times now, and it's doing great. I don't think the sheet foam had much effect on the ride of the boat, as the boat rides great! The Crestliner hull rides much softer than any other aluminum boat I've ever experienced. It's day and night compared to my old 17' Sea Nymph. Friends I've had on the boat have also commented about the nice ride. It really is a great hull. Doesn't leak a drop either.

The motor is doing great too. All I did to the motor was carb rebuilds, water pump, prop shaft seal and fresh gear oil. From day one it really has run fantastic. The talk you've probably heard about OMC loopers is true, they are awesome motors. It starts real easy and has lots of torque. This rig gets up on plane in no time. The fastest I've had it is 42mph (GPS). With a little tweaking I could probably get a little more out of it, but right now it's plenty fast enough already for my needs.

When I bought this boat on eBay last year I was somewhat "rolling the dice". Though it did take a lot of effort to get it back in decent shape, I'm pretty happy with the results.
