Cushions

I am restoring a 1986 Glassport runabout. One of the many projects is replacing the cushions that were in the open bow. I took the old ones out and used the old water logged plywood as a template, I used 3/4" plywood ( too big? ) bought some good 2" marine foam and got them all recovered with some decent vinyl. Problem now is getting them installed.
The original ones for the backing cushions had snap on buttons over the screws, the seats were just obviously hinged which aren't my problem. I went to drill a whole through the vinyl and foam to go through the plywood to go through the fiberglass so I can attach the cushion. Problem is the drill bit got so caught up in the foam, I basically ruined the cushion, luckily I have some extra vinyl.
I can't get behind it with my hands so I guess I need to know what the trick is to get these installed. Gussing the originals were installed prior to the rest of the boat being put together.
Thanks!

Re: Cushions

So the old cushions had "snap straps" that were sewn into the back of the cushions ..

You want to Mod how the New cushions are mounted then without the Snap Straps ?

Re: Cushions

Sorry I wasn't clear. There are 2 cushions on each side of the bow. Orignally they were attached by screws that went through the vinyl, plywood and fiberglas. Then there was a snap on button that went over the head of the screw, the button had matchin vinyl.
There are also 3 smaller cushions, all serving as back cushions to the seat cushions.
Hope this helps.

Hole punch will go through vinyl and foam. Then screw down. Carpet makes a mess like that too.

Re: Cushions

Problem is not getting through the vinyl and foam, problem is getting through the vinyl, foam, plywood and fiberglass. How about if I take off the vinyl and foam, drill the 3 holes in the plywood, re foam and vinyl, then push like an ice pick through the vinyl and foam, find the hole, then I can get a screw through.
