Re: Cutting the lawn

I like having a nice yard. I mow it as high as I can, fertilize often, spray for weeds and water when needed.

With that said, I live in a sub-division and it only takes me 45 minutes from start to finish to cut my lawn. If I had 3 or 4 acres... I probably wouldn't spend so much time/energy on it.

Re: Cutting the lawn

I love a big green lawn. Mowing makes for great "me time" and I just like riding on my mower, anyhow. I wish it didn't grow so quickly, but I could never own a house with little to no lawn. Wandering around in my bare feet is too nice to go without.

You bet, cut around the house and the field to keep the mosquitos down, looks great when I am finnished, and I have installed a "beverage holder" on the ridem for those warmer days. :D

We no longer have lawn issues...we installed synthetic grass two years ago. Of course, we have a very small lawn (we live in a townhouse) so it wasn't much of a chore in the first place. We just got tired of the yellow crop circles caused by the dog's urine.

Comes with a 10 year warranty. No fading, no wear and tear. Plus no cutting grass:D

If you have children or pets , I wouldn't spray for weeds .

And now, on top of HATING mowing grass, I actually broke the steel handle of my mower. So, I have to get it welded before i can mow my grass again! More time and money out of my pocket, when I already spent $3.00 on gasoline! (that might last all summer! ;) )

I wish I had the money, I'd have that artificial grass installed, but at $10 a sq ft it'd add up in a hurry

Re: Cutting the lawn

I absolutely hate grass cutting and think that having a lawn is a waste of time.

I will not fertilize........ I cut as LOW as possible every cut......

I am a somewhat religious man and if the man up above wants my lawn to live he will take care of it ;)

I would personally IGNORE :p any lawn advice from the "South" since we have different species of grass and different seasons.

Bob, I just KNEW you were an alright guy! This is EXACTLY how I feel! My dream is to concrete my entire yard!

Here ya go Bob and TilliamWe:D

I do everything possible to kill my lawn short of dumping gas on it.
The shorter the better I say too.

I cut my grass short, I have my decks set at about 2 1/2". In fact, I do not know how it keeps coming back each year:D. I have five acres and it is all mowed. During boating season, it gets a little shaggy, but in the spring it gets cut quite often. I like the way it looks when it is fresh cut.
As far as the weed and feed, I would go broke.

The company we ordered from sent us about 8 samples of grasses to choose from, such as bluegrass, fescue, ryegrass, bermuda, St. Augustine, etc. The prices varied from $10 a sq ft down to $2.50, so it depends on what you choose. I think we payed just over $4 sq ft. We also installed it ourselves which cut down on the price. But again, we have a small backyard. I doubt we would have done this if we had a normal sized yard.

But if anyone is thinking about doing this, I highly recommend it. No dirt, no bugs, no weeds, no cutting, no fertilizer, no watering, etc.

my yard isn't large, maybe 20x50 but we have dogs and they just DESTROY the grass, we're moving soon so maybe next house we can do it.

Do the dogs still relieve themselves on the astroturf? Is it permeable? I'd get a third job and a second mortgage to pay for this stuff if it meant no more yard work and it holds up to dogs and kids!!

Yes, the dogs still relieve themselves on the grass. They didn't react one bit when it was installed. There are small holes about every inch throughout the grass so everything drains. When you install, they recommend that you put at least three inches of pea gravel underneath...this also helps with draining. Normal rainfall flushes everything away and if the dogs have a messy accident, we usually just hose it off. The only negative, is that in the hot summer months if it hasn't rained in 1-2 weeks, we'll notice a urine smell. When this happens, my husband usually puts the sprinkler out for an hour or so. Otherwise, no other complaints.

This is the company we ordered from but I think even Home Depot sells it now in some states.

I too take pride in a nice lawn. I weed, fertilize and love riding the mower. I do however hate the evil weed-eater!!!

Re: Cutting the lawn

I cut it to about 2-3 inches. The shorter the better, so I don't have to mow it 3 days later.

And If I expect a drought to come on, not likely in an el nino year, then I will cut higher. maybe...

If you bought a fake dog, that would cut down on the pee smell... :D
