Re: cutting up deck

Arrowglass,
Do you have any prints you can email to me at Craig.Osterhage@pwrm.com.

I have a leaking gas tank on my 1988 Bayliner Ciera SB 2455. It is located under the aft cabin. IT is a 55 Gal tank, and I believe the dimensions are approx 4'L x 39"W x 9" deep. I believe this should be able to fit out of the aft cabin and into main cabin then out of the boat.

How to being? And where to cut? Please help as I have no intention of paying the +$3500 for a marina to replace tank. Tank cost is approx $300. I will have to scrap this boat, if I can not repair it. Would not be able to justify putting in the additional $3500 into it.

Please help

Re: cutting up deck

2K boat Been there done that. If you are dealing with an I/O there's not much to it. OB is harder to do but still possible the transom is the only place the bays are bonded and it fairly to break it loose As long as you have a means to lift the deck has it a is heavy piece. Place a padded 2by in your forword hatch and use the cleats to lift the rear. Disconnecting all wiring and pluming is the toughist part put ALL :note:( during production nearly everything is installed in the deck half of the boat etc. wiring, cables, pluming then connected after the deck is dropped in place . of that is accessible via access plates& interior panels already in your boat (production) is the name of game in the business. It looks a lot harder than it is  good luck I will stay in touch Love my BAYLINERS ps. i will dig some pics to give you an idea what your dealing with

Re: cutting up deck

jomac- thanx been waiting for some one to come foward to give sometype of reassurance any way. i really like the boat and would hate to destroy it by cutting. its a 94 1802 w/a and to this day i dont know why bliner didnt make an access plate to remove them. any help would be great. i love bayliner too they are great boat with a bad rap. whats the 2x4 for? and does the bottom hull need to be shored to keep shape.? have never done this before.

Re: cutting up deck

2x4 in your forward hatch(cuddy cabin) distribes the weight more evenly thoughout the forward portion of the deck. your trailer will be fine if it's a bunk style p.s. still tring to find all my old pics and get them ON here  boats i could build blind folded, computers on the other hand  Be sure your tank needs replacing try replacing all the hoses first!

Re: cutting up deck

i just viewed and saved them.
what kinda of hoist did you use. as i will probably have to make my own. getting to all the plumbing & wiring is no problem, ive already spent many hours with a light investigating.
i am so glad that there is another answer than just cutting up the deck.
did you have too shore up the sides to keep it true, if not did the top go back on with no problems?
jasonj makes the tri hull look easy, but this 1802 is quit big but yet small.
im trying to find the site i had saved last year on how to make your own tank leak down tester to be sure. but atleast if i have to do it ill get to see how bad the stringers are.
let me ask how many critters did you find in yours? dead or alive?

Re: cutting up deck

I cheated i had the use of a winch back wrecker :D lifted it striaght up then rolled hull out from under it. --The hull might flex some nothing to worry about, when redecking just start from the front(use punch or two to hold in place) work your way back inch by inch while letting it down inch by inch(Helps to have help at this point, someone on each side),using wide putty scrapers to work deck over edges of hull untill you get the splashwell down to the transom (dry fit first) then lift it back up just enough to rebond splashwell& transom .Takes a pile of rivets to reattach, I used SS screws but predrilled(easy to strip out new holes if you dont, used old rivet holes to realign hull&deck) and counter sunk the heads of the screws so the trim would fit flush either works well--Well about 2' of stingers, the subfloors up to the first crossmember&transom was not all completely rotten but i replaced it--A frames would do just go slow and be carefull

Re: cutting up deck

so i assume that there is no sealant or very little between the top and bottom except where the transom is.
that there is alot of rivets, that need to be drilled. is there any certain size bit that i should use or do they make one just for drilling out rivets? < you know like the ones you can get to drill out spot welds >.

Re: cutting up deck

Yep, the rub rail is siliconed top&bottom, the rivets are most likey 3/16" just drill the head off(slowly or they'll spin) then knock them though with a punch(note: if the center pin is still in the rivet it helps to knock it though with a small punch first! ITS steel doesn't drill easily Good luck :)

Re: cutting up deck

2K BOAT
When I just read your post dated dec 8 2002 I figured it was too late. But jomac has walked you through the right steps. In 1989 while working at a Bayliner dealership I had to do the same thing on a customers brand new boat! Using a deck plate wasnt a option. You will have through bolts SS around the transom area (where the customers can see them) then like jomac says its all pop rivets.. the only thing I did different was that I sealed the two hulls together when I put them together again. No need for sealing the rub rail after your done :) I also used the same Alum and counter sank the holes then used SS thru bolts and SS locking nuts.
As jomac said! BTDT!

Luck to ya
Link
