Hi All,

A couple of guys have just reported a severe issue occuring at just a few dozen hours with 2.1L 4-strokes and resulting in connecting rod breaking apart and damaging cylinder block, in particular with a 2016 Merc F115CT and a 2015 Merc F80 reported in Russia here (there appear to be a lot more of those affected, in fact the OP got exact same issue once again following Mercury funded block replacement):

and with a 2016 Merc F100 reported in Australia here (by Bryon of Redland Bay, Other on July 9, 2017):

Any clues what's causing it and ideally some bulletin on this issue? I've seen several posts on a similar symptom with Yamaha F80/F100 and less frequently with 4-stroke Mercs sharing the same 1.596L block a few years earlier (the root cause believed to be restricted oil supply to something in the bottom cylinder, I think to a valve leaving it stuck open) but this one is a different block.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. Hope it's not a taboo topic to discuss here )

Can you get a new block from Mercury and put her back together?
Can you bore only the damaged cylinder 30 thousands over, for $100 bucks to remove the damage, and put her back together.
Find a used block, put her back together.
Buy a new block and put her back together.

The OP doesn't need a new block or motor. He's talking about reported problems, not a problem with his motor.

Correct: it's just a heads up for those owning an early model with this block. Except for this issue they are reportedly great outboards all round.

Apparently some of those who hit this issue eventually got theirs replaced by Mercury, which is good to hear. Those less lucky will have to consider the rest of the options you suggested. Hope the issue will go away on revised ones with exhaust relief opening already raised.

The problem is Merc isn't covering the damage under warranty. So any owners will be eating parts and repair costs for those purchased before the change.
