This wouldn't be a Vista OS would it? Vista is notorious for having an incomplete printer driver library.

Did you try dell's troublshooter?
Dell A920

When your printer has a problem, before contacting Dell Customer Support, check the following items. Make sure:

[Some skipped - already done]

• You removed the stickers and tape from the bottom of the ink cartridges. For help, refer to the setup documentation.
• The paper is loaded correctly. For help, see page 12.
NOTE: Do not force paper into the printer.
• You installed both of the ink cartridges. The Dell AIO Printer A920 will only work if you have both cartridges installed.
• The color ink cartridge is secure in the left carrier and the black ink cartridge is secure in the right carrier.
• The printer software was installed correctly. For help, refer to the setup documentation.

Some additional questions:

Does your paper feed button work?

This may also help:

Clean the nozzles when:

Characters are not printing completely.

White dashes appear in graphics or printed text.

Print is smudged or too dark.

Colors on print jobs are faded or they differ from the colors on the screen.

Vertical lines are jagged or edges are not smooth.

To clean the nozzles:
Load plain paper in the printer.

Open the Dell Printer Solution Center. For help, refer to your Owner's Manual.

From the Maintenance tab, click Clean to fix horizontal streaks.

Click Print.

A nozzle page prints, forcing ink through the nozzles to clean the clogged nozzles.

Print your document again to verify your print quality has improved.

(It says you may need to do this up to 3 times...)

I'm about ready to declare your printer dead. But before I do, one more thing...

We're assuming the second set of cartridges are good. If they sit around too long (even still in the unopened package) they can dry out. Most cartridges even have a "use by" date on them. It's easy to rule out if they're dried out though...

Lay out some paper towels. Hold your cartridge with the printhead facing down toward the paper towels. Now shake the cartridge hard as if it were a salt shaker when the salt has a little moisture in it and won't come out.

If you don't see ink on the paper towels, your cartridge is dried up. Swab the printhead with isopropyl alcohol and repeat until you see ink or replace the cartridge with a new one that's inside its expiration date.

If you do see ink then you know the cartridge is capable of printing but the printer is not getting the proper signal to the cartridge/printhead and is most likely "dead".

Re: Dadgum All in one

Epson and Canon are the two brands that use printheads incorporated in the print carriage.
As far as I know everyone else uses the printhead in the cartridge design.
I have been an Epson fan for years but their consumer product line has deteriorated to the point that I will not recommend them anymore.
Their corporate posture seems to be stick it to the consumer from every angle.Their product design is dictated by cost, their printers are thirsty and very inefficient,I have used up their tiny ink cartridges just working on the printer. They have designed the printer to refuse to print if even one of the four cartridges are low with no workaround and basically they are just unfriendly products to service or get parts for.New printheads cost $130.00?
I have an old Epson Stylus Color that I will continue to use as long as I can buy ink for it because it prints good color photos but I am leaning towards some of the older HP printers these days.A nice HP 940c is a robust printer with no printhead problems that can't be solved with a new cartridge.
Epsons biggest weak point is their printheads.Inkjet printers by their very nature have problems with their printheads drying out as was mentioned previously and unless you use a printer every few days at least that will be a problem but the solution is easy when your printhead is in the cartridge.
Lexmark seemed to be the leader in cheaper is better technology when they came on the market but I can see that the competition has all gotten onboard as the newer Canon printers have gone downhill as well. That is progress I guess.
When you can buy a new printer for less than the ink would cost for it has to raise a flag to us as consumers. The tail is wagging the dog here it seems.Ron G

Re: Dadgum All in one

I have a Epson stylus on my other machine and has been for years.
It has never caused any problems.
If not for needing the scanning stuff, I would not have an AIO.
i386, went by what the Dell tech told me and checked the cardtridges with a damp cloth and had ink in both as it came out onto the cloth everytime I swiped it.
Once she changed the ink and it still did nothing, I had her do the same thing and she said that the ink came out very easy from them without much wiping at all.
I think the printer died.
I got a new CX7400 Epson I will hook up today.
Thanks for all the peeps help.

Re: Dadgum All in one

I see by reading this thread you have gotten a lot of advise as well as sarcasm well here's my two cents. By the way, I love my Dell All In One.
I have a Dell All in One A10 Printer 922.
Double Click the Printer Icon in the Task Bar, Click on the Troubleshooting tab and it will ask you if you want to check cable Connections, Communication and several other options. If that doesn't work go buy another cable. Radio Shack has them as well as several other sources. Keep your receipt and you can take the cble back if indeed there isn't a cable problem. Oh don't laugh make sure the power button on the printer lights up and the little menu window is legible.

Well, we had a $25 new cable that was tried also.
This is a 920.
Power light is on and I ran so many trouble shooting things, I was ready to really shoot.
Little menu window, 920 don't have.:(

When you ran the Communication test did it say the communication was working? The only other thing I can think of is to make sure the port is enabled but it must be if the printer was working before. Unless you disabled it accidentally. Sorry I couldn't help.

Re: Dadgum All in one

The printhead driver transistors fail on the main board and they have obscure numbers on them, that is they cannot be crossed to anything that can be bought from the aftermarket vendors like NTE but you can get the data sheets off of the net for them and then match them up with stuff that you can buy and make them work.
They generally use a case style similar to a TO-220 and the replacement TO-220 can be used with the mica insulator and heatsink compound.
The original transistors look like TO-220 except that they are completely insulated, even the mounting flange. They will be mounted on a large heatsink on the main board along with a thermistor that regulates the current if the printhead gets too hot.
I have found that the transistors are a complementary pair usually, one being NPN and the other will be a PNP.They are cheap, like under 5 bucks for the pair.If you can catch it before the printhead dries out you can save it.The symptoms are exactly the same as yours appear to be.
You can buy a scanner on ebay delivered to your door for about 10 bucks.
I like the Microtek line, actually that is what I started with years ago but they are easy to get drivers etc for.
I will chase down the replacements for you want to persue it.Ron G

When you mentioned the USB, it got me to thinking about it. I have the same printer and it was a hassel with that USB port. If you go to the properties of the printer, then ports, what does it say for the printer?
Mine says USB001 Virtual printer port for USB. Try deleting that. There is also a trouble shooting section that comes with the Dell software.

Ok it sounds like you need to slide the slider in side the printer the one that moves back and forth to print. slide it side to side till it feel a little free don't force it. Don't be afraid to open it make sure nothing is lose. Let me know how it goes.

Bigcatchh, welcome to iboats.
Don't know about the slider thing.
It was moving from one side to the other when trying to print.
It's gone to a new home of a member of my freecycle group.
