Re: Deadliest Catch

1. Fishers & Fishing Workers = 143 Total deaths, 51

I'm confused by these numbers... is it 143 total deaths, or 51 total deaths?

I realize one of those numbers is total deaths per 100,000 workers, but is it the first or second number?

9. Drivers - 27 Total Deaths, 940

Drivers (Truck & Salesmen) has the highest TOTAL deaths, but when based off of the total number of workers fishing has everything beat.

Fishers & Fishing Workers = 143 Total deaths, 51

i think the 51 is the the total deaths . and 143 is out of 100,000.

Re: Deadliest Catch

I have an issue with pilots being number 2. Flying is absolutely the safest form of transportation, something like umteen thousand times more than driving. How in the heck can flying a plane be the second most dangerous job in our country? How did 88 pilots die? Where? How? Maybe these little private airplanes, but when people think pilot they think airliner.

Sorry, I don't buy that a bit. We've only had one airliner crash in the past 3 or 4 years, and that was pilot error, and the only survivor was one of the pilots. That just doesn't add up, sorry.

I can promise you that mining is a hell of a lot more dangerous than flying an airliner around.

That explains why every life insurance quote I've tried to get has asked if I'm a pilot... yet it doesn't ask if I fish.... what's up with that?

Pilots also includes crop dusters, helicopter pilots, and test pilots. Keep in mind, the ranking is based on per 100,000 workers. Even though 101 pilots died compared to 940 drivers, when based on how many pilots there are and how many drivers the stats show being a pilot is more dangerous.

Sorry it's confusing, I was in a hurry when I posted. The first number is per 100000 workers, the 2nd is the total deaths for 2006.

Here's where I got the stats:

My Brother crab fished out of Dutch fer ten years. He now fishes, (both gill net and purse siene), only fer Salmon outa Cordova Ak as one of the "high liners" in a 500 plus boat fleet.

It takes a lot of "hair" to live yer entire Adult life and work in life threatening rough competitive cornditions. That has to be one of the most spectacular places on Earth with mountians that rise from sea level to over 19,000 feet. Large brown bears that stand over 12 feet high and weigh over 1600 pounds, that can out run ya. All sorts of wild game to eat, allong with the fish.

Very kool series on Discovery! JR

Re: Deadliest Catch

Deadliest I have been hooked on since day one!! Love that show. AXE men, love the old timer, that's a honest days work!! Ice Truckers, love it too, where is it at this year??? There's a thing or two to learn from these guys.
I really enjoy the psychological part of these shows. Very interesting to have a front row seat watching these "traditional" jobs. If I could do it all over again, I would live hard and die young like these guys. Man's men, if you know what I mean.... There are some great shows being put on by history/discovery.

P.S.
Ever get the feeling the captains on deadliest catch may be using speed (uppers) or something?? Coffee doesn't keep you going that long.... and I have seen a few look pretty "rough"

P.S.S.
That new pest control show is a joke!!! Those guys have absolutely no clue and I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts they get pulled for violations of the state law. Interesting show none the less.

Re: Deadliest Catch

Watch Deadliest Catch every week. Yes, i do think some of them have to take uppers. Last night's episode had Sig, the captain of the Northwestern and his brother who works on the deck, competing to see who could last longer without quiting. The brother won after they had been going non stop for almost 40 hours. The captain started getting pissed because his brother wasn't throwing in the towel and he was dead tired and didn't want to give in to his younger brother. This show shows you what long hours and hard work is all about.
