I believe that everyone has the right to be on the water, wheather it be on a 40 ftr. or a inner-tube. I think it's my responsibility as a boater to watch out for the other guy wheather I am right or wrong I don't want to runover anybody. Who has the right in this video:

rofl!!!

that was pretty good.

as far as the light thing goes i think everyone should have the proper lighting.... even if you dont have room or weight capacity for a batt you can get those ones that run of D cell or AA

I believe everyone has a right to the water and I REALLY dont want to run anyone over either. Who wants to deal with that?

There is a point where one idiot can ruin it for everyone. That idiot is usually the one who gets run down on their bike because they know the oncoming vehicle has brakes and will slow; or the guy who paddles his kyak as he eyes the birdies not caring that he's cutting off a 35' fountain with 7 on board and the 6 boats behind him.

This is also the idiot who removes himself from the gene pool and whos relatives sue the **** out of the guy who couldnt stop. All because this guy has a right to be on the water.

The only required lights for an anchored boat is one white light--on a sailboat, this is on the top of the mast. This may be fine in the open ocean, but near shore, that light way up there is often obscured by other tall lights and, like a tree stand to a deer, not likely to tbe noticed by a boater watching the surface for unlit kayaks and fishyfish's innertube. A smart sailboat owner would leave a light on the deck level as well (but not the running lights.)
When I had a small sailboat we were instructed to tie a flashlight to the boom to shine on the sail. Worked well.

What it basically comes down to is, THEIR ARE WAY TOO MANY IDIOTS IN THIS WORLD. (who are destined to be removed from the gene pool);) Wonder what the next one will be like?:D:D:D
HEY YA' ALL', WATCH THIS:eek:

Actually several years ago, I checked with a water cop about what was required for a hobie 16 sailboat (no power, open sail boat). He said that what was required was, "A light ready at hand to shine (on the sail?) in time to avoid a collision." Note the requirement says "in time to avoid a collision".

Im fine with the 'in time to avoid a collision' thing, but scrambling to put up your anchor light when a 40' boat is 30' away does not meet those requirements.
I must admit I am guilty of lighting up those boats with a big spotlight. Maybe the laser image burned into their eyeballs will remind them of their own light next time (also good for stopping them from chasing after you and giving you hell for cutting so close) ;)

never shine a light at someone's eyes at night. Takes at least 20 minutes to recover night vision. I boat in a busy harbor and also in a completely deserted marsh with no lights. The tiniest light is fatal to safety, ironically. Shine it on yourself instead, or at most on his bow deck.

No shortage of idiots on the water, that's for sure. Around here, they seem to be mostly on jet fleas. I see them all of the time running around the bayou at night. That is both dumb and illegal in Louisiana, but they do it just the same.

BTW, chemical light sticks come in various colors and make great backup running lights. I get mine at Academy Sports. If you lose one of your running lights and can't seem to fix it with a bulb replacement, or just need to get some nav "lights" back in a hurry, a light stick and some tape is a great alternative.

Very true. I keep two sets in both of my boats for emergencies. I have even had to use them a time or two.

Good idea!

I had my port side nav light go out on me one night, but the bulb looked fine. Took apart the starboard light to swap bulbs to see if it was the wiring, and accidentally dropped the good starboard bulb into the water.

Turns out the port side bulb WAS bad, and now I had NO nav lights.
Managed to rig up different bulbs stolen out of a couple of my interior lights to get back to the marina.

I guess this is my admission for the SHT forum. Have one other story I can tell, that I had forgotten about (maybe repressed). Might have to add that later tonight.

Re: death wish kayaker

The last time I used some of mine, the bulb in the bow light of my boat burned out. Since it provided illumination for both the red and green lenses, I had no bow light at all. I was also in a canal watching fireworks (7/4) and there were marine patrol boats all over the place, as well as plenty of other boaters.

One of the marine patrol guys had been drifting right next to me, during the fireworks, and was giving me "the eye" as I discovered that my light was out. I think he was fixin to cite me, when he saw me pulling a waterproof ammo can full of gear out. From that point, he got curious and finally smiled as I taped a red and green stick to my port and starboard bow cleats.

This may **** alot of people off but I need to share ,
I live on a canal that ends about 300 yards from my dock . it is a canal that is very calm most of the time , Like glass on the water .We get alot of fishing boats as well as some Kayaks. I have had a fisherman knock on my back door and tell me they cast into my boat and he was very sorry . However I have had 2 encounters with a Kayaker and they were both bad . The first was hanging on to my boat so he could talk on his cell phone ... Got mad when I came outside and asked what he was doing . The second was coming down the canal as I was starting my boat and got pissed that I disturbed his ride on the canal .. This almost escalated to the police being called had he not decided to leave . I also have had several experiances with kayakers around Chimney Rock , NC in the river. There would be 20 to 30 people in a river pool in the river and the Kayakers would just bust through thinking they owned the river .. They hit a kid comming off a waterfall one day and never looked back . I have no problem with a Kayack but do have a problem with the attitide of people who are in them thinking they own the water ... kinda like a group of bicycle riders riding 15 mph in the middle of the road in a 45 mph zone..
We all respect the rights to water but when people get a case of being stupid or feel that they have all the right of way... They are usally wrong.

I know this comes no where near to covering all Kayakers but the people who are in them need to use some common sense!!

I was piloting a 15,000 steel hulled houseboat, with the bow lit up with 5-6 people talking/laughing. I was probably moving 5mph. Plenty of noise and time for people to take notice of me and at least shine a spotlight in my direction if they didn't have working anchor/nav lights.

I'd have felt bad if I split someones fiberglass boat in half, I'd have felt worse about the scratched paint on my bow, and everyones spilled drinks on my boat.

The lights are on there for a reason...

Haha, it cracks me up when people are totally oblivious to the fact that youre in a houseboat that cannot easily turn or stop. They will run right behind you when backing out of port and cut right across you when leaving the harbor. Ill get me a free boat one of these days. :D

It doesn't have to be dark to be invisible in a kayak , mine is camo colored and set up for fishing with rod holders, etc. One sunny afternoon I was anchored in amongst the lily pads fishing for bass, sunfish etc. When a fellow in a bass boat came around the pier on his trolling motor, ran right over my bobber and was on a collision course for me when his little boy yelled dad there is a boat right there. He freaked and cut it hard, he really had panicked as he was still 30' ft away and I hadn't yelled yet. I don't know how he hadn't heard my little radio playing. Then he acted like I wasn't supposed to be there, I think he was scared that he could have run over me because he wasn't watching where he was going. His boy had likely heard those words he used before and I know I had. Still it ruined my day. Then you get the idiots who think it is fun running circles around you seeing if they can swamp you , but that is another story.
