Re: Decarb

I decarb with water, Flahthead. <br /><br />It is a learned technique and if done wrong can cause damage, but the water is free.<br /><br />Spray water into the carb(s) of a fully warmed engine at about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle. You will get black smoke and steam in the exhaust. Continue until there is only steam, then another five minutes or so after the steam stops.<br /><br />Good luck. :)

Re: Decarb

I use the Mercury Power Tune. The way that I do it ( which may or may not be right ) is put my motor in a tank and start it, let it get warmed up, open it up to as fast as it will go in neutral, (which is about half throttle) and spray that stuff in until the motor almost dies, and then let off. I do this until I have used about a quarter of a can. After that I let it run until all the nasty smoke is gone. Then I pull the plugs and pump the cylinders full of it and let it sit for about 15 minutes while the engine is warm, pull the plugs back out and pull the rope and spin it over. Then I put the plugs back in and start it back up until it runs clean again, then I replace plugs with new ones. This might be over kill, but my 1974 Merc 20 HP runs just as good as an brand new one and starts on one pull. Like I said, this might not be the right way to do it, but it has worked very well for me.

Re: Decarb

JB <br /> Water?? I have to say I have never heard of that before. Sounds a little risky. Cant the same thing be done with one of the commercial cleaners out there. It would seem the water would not clean as well a detergent based cleaner. Back in the day when I rode 2 stroke dirt bikes we would pull the head and jugs and and clean them up that way.But I guess that is not real practical on marine motors. I have also read on past post that decarbing an marine engine will do as much harm then good.Whats the deal? Anybody care to comment on this. <br />----Flathead

Re: Decarb

Fathead,I would recommend you obtain one of the decarbonization products available through your dealer. While water may be effective at removing carbon deposits through atomization from piston heads, the cylinder blowby will also allow its vapor to enter crankcase and condense.

Re: Decarb

Hi Flathead...<br /><br />Most OMC, Bombardier, products have a maint. valve right on the primer solenoid. If not, you can get one at your friendly neihborhood dealership and install it your self. Your 28SPL should have one right on it. It will look like a tire valve. The aerosal cans from OMC will have a screw on valve to attach to the maint. valve. All you need to do is run the engine till up to temp. and let it idle at around 1200rpms or so it don't stall while putting the tuner to it. When I do it, I load the engine up pretty good with the stuff and let it set a good 24 hours. Then I run the engine at a good rpm to clean it out. There are other engine tuners out there that will work also. Most have a straw to attach to the spray head and all you do is shoot the tuner down the carb throat with the engine running. Check iboats store. They probably have it under lubri-plate.<br /><br />Jim

miloman,<br />Did you mean this one?<br /> http://marinemechanic.com/site/page95.html <br />and from there to this one too<br /> http://marinemechanic.com/new-images/2_cycle_engine_tuner.htm <br /><br />How to post a link:<br />(just copy and paste)<br />find the website, highlite/mark the adress in the adressbox in your browser, copy and past it here. <br />If you want to rename the adress to make it short or any other reason <br />click on "URL" below (next to the "Instant Graemlins" like:  )<br />paste the adress - enter<br />write the new name/explanation/whatever - enter<br /><br />Some adresses are a little too long to just paste so use the "URL" button.<br />Ok, that was off topic. <br /><br />Clanton, "Whats wrong with following the instructions on the product used?" Hmm... that is one way to do it. :D
