heres the damage. the transom supports are going to have to be replaced also, but the first big problem will be taking the cap off due to the unique design. i hope i dont do too much damage while doing this, but the boat is wrecked at the minute !

i have the cap nearly split. ill finish it off today.

i had to grind out the bolts, then cut through the resin with an angle grinder.

i damaged a few sections of the 'lip' of the cap and hull while doing this, so ill have to repair that before putting back together.

i packed the gaps with drill bits-i had a few lying around, but wedges would have been better.

ok, cap off, transom and knees are out.

question is can i fit the new knee supports into the grooves left out of the old fibreglass from where the old knee supports were?

or do i have to toatally grind away the fibreglass and gelcoat to dust and start again. see pics.

Its fine to reuse the, just clean up with shop vac and acetone and sand real good before gluing in the new parts....

great. thanks westtexasrepublic. thats what i wanted to hear. i ground away all the weaker bits. whats left is strong.

getting ready to put some wood in now then.

some people suggest using ply for knees and stringers. if i were to use ply whould i need the same thickness of knee?. would i then have to build up layers of ply to do this?

ok , im thinking of extending the transom so i can fit a long shaft engine.

short shafts are hard to come buy.

if i extend it by 3 inches without it looking strange to give me 18" will that be ok?

also the original transom was 1" thick, with lots of glass and gelcoat over it.

should i make it thicker or stick with original thickness? thanks.

3 inches higher takes it to the red line, without ruining the original 'look' of the boat

Ordinarily I would recommend a jackplate and then link you to this thread: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=321432 instead of messing with the boat.....however, that one looks really easy to do and I see no issues with you adding 3 inches too it. I would add some thickness to it if I could without too much trouble.

yeah sorry that picture isnt really recent. ive already removed the cap and transom.

i have the knee supports removed ,glass ground down and transom ready to go in.

got the stringers out today.

cut the fibreglass off the top, and the stringers just lifted out

the keel was the wettest, and took a bit of prying to remove them

im going to replace these with plywood, as they were not as thick as i first thought, being only 16mm thick x 40mm wide.

replaced the stringers with 18mm ext ply.

transom cut out roughly to shape with two pieces of 18mm ext ply.

i ordered some titebond III fromthe USA, as you guys recommended it to bond the two pieces of the transom together.

I raised the transom to 18 inches to accomodate a long shaft engine when the time comes.

nearly ready to fibreglass!

ok i would just like your advice please.

as you know im using plywood for my stringers, originally they were solid wood.

i have my stringers laid flat to the hull. i have noticed that many of you who have used plywood for stringers have had the edge of the ply laid to the hull.

i have laid mine flat to try to maintain the original deck height.
(see the left hand stringer in attached pic)

will my stringers provide enough longitudinal stiffness if they are laid flat to the hull?

or am i worrying uneccessarily?

I would grid out your deck with string from underside of the cutout from your existing deck.. mockup your stringers to below that string line to exclude glass. making sure your stringers are level all the way front to back and side to side ( account for a gap of the string line to the stringers to be even..your going to add about 5mm-3/16" to the stringers. that being your top level of the stringer to deck mate.. ).

Show us how high the stringers are going to be for your deck when your done with this..it might be ok .. or it might be time to refit/build a different set of stringers..

Some might say just glass those things in..and deck it..take your time..the boats not going anywere. measure 3x and cut once...

the stringers in the above picture are new.

they are 18mm thick plywood laid flat

they are exatly the same length and width of the original stringers.

i have set them inside the original fibreglass that the original stringers were in.
(i only cut the top of the fibreglass off and removed the original stringers)


im am planning to glue the new stringers inside the original fibreglass with PB resin and glass over the top of them

my main concern at the minute is will the plywood be strong enough laid flat, not on its side as i have seen some people lay stringers.

Your boat will move like a dolphin..not a shark..therfore stringers ( Ply if you will ) would be stronger layed upright.

But for your case I see no real problem ( from what I see and you describe ) with stacking your stingers then glassing them in..

The one thing I would consider is for the last glassing of the stringer to wrap to the hull..not to just "cap" them per-say.. ( shown in your diagram ).

ive added some more pictures to try to show what im doing.

i thought it would be ok to lay the ply flat to the hull inside skin.

its 18mm thick ply which is exactly the same thickness as the solid wood stringers which i removed.this would give me the original deck height when laid on the stringers.

if you dont think it will be strong enough i will have to buy another sheet of ply and lay them with the side of the ply to the skin.

ok i now have my stringers glassed in.

total lay up is chopped strand mat 450g/m, 450g/m woven roving, with another 450g/m CSM on top.

polyester resin.



on the left hand stringer i used white resin i had lying around on the first layer of CSM.

i bedded my stringers to the hull with resin and milled fibres mixed in.

this worked well, though i had to weigh one of the stringers down with various tool boxes, while it cured to the hull as it was slightly bowed.

the transom is dry fitted and has one layer of CSM on the fwd side only.--i will fibreglass the aft side when mating it to the inner transom skin.

im also going to bolt my transom to the skin, as was the original desgn.
