Cool old motor you got there. Not to worry, these old motors are very reliable and easy to fix. You should be able to get almost all of the basic tune up parts (carb kits, points & condensers, water pumps, etc...) you need right here at iboats. Search the forums and web for info on OMC (Johnson, Evinrude, Gale) "Big Twin" motors. These links should help get you started.
I'm not sure if you have NAPA auto parts in your neck of the woods, but they sell the same Sierra brand replacement parts you can get here at iboats, so it may be worth looking around for. Good luck.
Lookin' good. That old 40 hp will make that little boat fly! Hold on tight! I would highly recommend installing a lanyard kill switch. The last thing you want is to fall out of the boat at 40 mph and see her go off into the sunset without you. I've used these on all of my motors, including my old '66 33 hp. It gives you both push button and/or lanyard kill options. They only cost about $10 US and install in about 5 min. Have the neighbors seen you sitting in it making "vroom-vrrom" noises yet? It's never too early to start day dreaming.
thanks kfa! yeah ive been vroom vrooming for a while now. that cutout switch loods very good. does that replace my push button cutout switch then?

yup the lanyard just replaces the stock push button kill switch. Just snip off the wires add a crimp on female adapter to each wire and attach it to the "M" post on the back of the new switch and that's it. Only takes about 5 min to install, if your motor already has a kill switch, 20 min if you need to install it from scratch. Here's a pic of one on my 10 hp and 20 hp. I like them because I go out alone so often.

more pics. i have added teleflex steering! real progress. and i have glassedsome wooden blocks to the deck. then i will bolt my seat boxes to these. no holes in the deck.
the outboard i am waiting for parts to arrive.
i have decided to just get her finished and get some use out of the boat. its been sat a long time and i havent even used it yet. so i will just finish it quickly, and not worry too much about cosmetic issues until next winter.
NOW YA TELL ME ,....i started at the back along the side , worked my way up towards the bow and when i reached the end of my cut , pulled the saw off the deck , i saw a 6" slice of daylight ,.....waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa,.....apparently the deck has a void between the hull but joins up near the steering wheel . waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa,..... @ ' be careful w/ trihulls '

ooo bad luck. i actually did the same thing and nicked about an inch or so, but i used an angle grinder at the corners so the cut was not as thick as the saw blade.
most things can be fixed though. the beauty of fibreglass!
