Re: Decking Options

Now that I've pretty much decided on the deck, I'd like to talk about deck coverings. I really like carpet, it feels good and looks good to me, but is it a good idea really? Seems like wet carpet would be a terrible choice for a boat and hard to keep clean. A non-skid coating seems to be the the most maintenance free option, but it's ugly to me. So, does anyone ever paint the deck and use snap in carpet or something like that. I'm looking for ideas. Would be nice to see some pics of non-skid coatings or snap in carpet or any other options if anyone has any. I gotta know where i'm going before I tear into this thing. Leaning toward carpet though. Thanks.

Okie, it sounds like the snap-in carpet would be your best bet. You're right about glued down carpeting... It's a water trap!

There are also quite a few non-skid molds you can use on the deck (if you were gel-coating it).

I'd be doing the snap-in carpeting though. Find one with a good rubber backing to it and pay someone to sew the edges of it once you've cut out the shape/shapes you need. The snaps themselves are very easy to install.

GREAT THREAD!!!!

Maybe consider industrial velcro. No metal snaps that need holes in the deck. None to stub toes on either. No need to lube velcro either.
You can have the velcro sewn to the carpet as well.
The during your post boating clean up just take the carpet out, hang it on a fence or wall and hose it off. Pressure washing it ieven better.
Then let it hang there until you go boating again.

Jeeperman Great idea with the velcro. I would have gone snap in if my carpet didnt cover the gunwhales. I glued it down and will probably regret it

Sweet. Great responses guys. Thanks a million. :) I think I might try my hand at the glassed plywood since so many feel so good about using it. You know how it is the first time you do something, afraid to scew it up. Heck if I can rebuild a house from the studs out all by my lonesome, I can dang sure put a floor in a boat eh. Gotta sack up and do it.;) In the mean time, if anyone hears about the perfect product, give me a holler.

lol, just remember, theres very few if any square corners in a boat !!

Now that velcro ain't a bad idea. Might give that some thought. My only concern with the snaps would be creating a place for water to get into the wood. Wonder if i could stick the snaps down with epoxy or something.

Re: Decking Options

Alright, I'm going to start rippin up the deck next week. At first I was nervous and even skeptical about putting wood back in, but now I'm freakin pumped to get started. I'd like to here from some of you pros about what fiberglass materials to use and where to get them. There's about a million to choose from looks like, do yall have a preference?

One more question. Do you screw the deck down, or liquid nails or what? If it's screwed, do you seal the screw holes somehow? Probably says in one of the many threads I've read, but I guess I missed it. I wanna know how to do it right. Thanks a bunch.
