Re: DEER HUNTERS! Lets see the pics, hear the stories!

Headed upstate NY on Friday for opening day on Sat. Stayed in a trailer bordering the Colgate estate that was donated to the state and is open to hunt. My 78 yr old dad and friends were along to stay in a trailer with a portable heater and stove and not much else. Sat morn had a glance at a spike buck but was spooked before I had a solid shot. My friend missed a nine pointer on the run. Crunchy dry leaves made stalking near impossible (no snow yet). Posted and waited (aka slept) to hear the squirrels, chipmonks and mice run around the leaves giving me with whiplash expecting a trophy walking by.
Had a few doe and fawn parades but did not see any bucks after opening morning. All of the activity probably sent them higher than I wanted to hike. First yr I remember all four of us getting skunked.
The beer was cold, the stew was hot, the outhouse was interesting, the cards were kind to me, the stories were long and the laughs were many. Another successful trip!

The fun of group hunting/camping, good friends, beverages, food- (good and bad!) storytelling etc. is most enjoyable to me when I get to hunt that way, not often enough. Bagging a deer or other large game is just a bonus to the good times shared IMO, especially if it's a bragging sized animal!!

Good luck, 'speck. Our regular season ended yesterday. Never saw a deer since opening day. BP started today. Went out late morning for a couple hours, getting ready to head back out. Woods sure are quiet. :)

Re: DEER HUNTERS! Lets see the pics, hear the stories!

Well, saw a legal buck and doe on the way into the park before sun up. Saw 4 doe on the way out after sun down, saw one doe early in the day, but 3 bears chased her away. A big sow and 2 year old cubs. They played around me, rolled over logs, scratched their backs, layed down and slept, etc. After almost an hour I decided to sneak out and head elsewhere. But it was fun watching them!

Found a 4 pt that was killed in muzzleloader or archer season. Either the person couldn't find it or they found it and ran since it was illegal (has to have 3 points on one side). Gonna hit it tomorrow morning and take the littlest aspeck with me till it starts to rain. Then in till Thursday. Too many appointments on Wednesday to be in the woods. Bummer, shame life gets in the way of hunting!

If it's not freezing cold, Knee high, ankle fitting, rubber boots are great for kepping your scent off the ground as you move around the woods. Used to be Lacrosse was about the only folks that made them. Now there are lots of un and insulated ones by many manufacturers. if you wear leather boots try putting alittle cover scent on the soles now and then as you walk to and from the area.Fox, raccon ,deer urine even skunk scent if you can stand it!!- a little goes a long way!!! Ive always used the uninsulated Lacrosse Lagrange?, there lighter than most and easy, quiet to walk in, do'nt rub on my heels as I walk. They are not too good in freezing temps though, unless you enjoy very cold feet!!! I also try to only wear them hunting, and wear and remove them at the hunting site when I leave and return to my truck.

Shoooot, 'speck, shoooot!

You left your stand with the bear still at your feet? You do know sows get very protective of their young...............

I haven't seen a deer since opening day over a week ago....

I mostly hunt from the ground, so I was on the ground to begin with ... the "cubs" were last years ... about 150lb ... Mom (about 350 - 400 lbs of her) wasn't too concerned about protecting them. I was at eye level with them, but they worked they way over to the next ridge and were laying down snoozing with the closest one being about 100 yards away and 150 yards being the greatest distance to them. They had no clue I was even there, wasn't worried about them.

It was tempting to shoot the deer yesterday, but the local authorities frown on shooting from your vehicle while the animals are in your headlights! Go figure! HA!

Today, nothing but rain and wet! Miserable. Did see a goobler struting for a hen today?????? Must have been a confused turkey!

Bet the "3 bears" got your heart racing at least for a little while.... Been such a warm November around here I'm not sure they're hibernating yet. I must say, in the 35 years I've been hunting I've never seen a bear. Mountain biking is another story.......

Yep, Musky, the heart rate rose a bit, especially when momma entered the scene! Sure was fun watching them play and sleep. If only they would show up during bear season! I swear someone tells them when it opens and closes, 'cuz we see deer in bear season and bear in deer season!

Re: DEER HUNTERS! Lets see the pics, hear the stories!

I have this "season" trouble w squirrels. They cry and scold me as I sneak through the woods, they sometimes approach very close and study me when I'm on the ground or sitting on a log, while flicking their tails trying to figure me out, I've had them jump on my boot or over my legs when sitting on the ground, back against a tree, or run up or down the tree, past my treeststand, all when i'm deer hunting:mad:. Deer season ends Jan 1, squirell runs through Feb. When I hunt them after deer season, I cannot find one w a slingshot or shaking vines and small trees w nests in them!!!! If I do find one, and he cannot find a hole to hide in, He's MINE! if you wait long enough, they will make a break for their homes, but usually they scamper into a hole in a tree to live another day!! ..........still waiting for Pop to fix the pic. I can Email the one I have if you want to PM me your Email address. Randy.................Update big buck pic, Cannot get pic down to size to upload here, may get a friend to try to modify it. The buck appears to be 5+ yrs old and LARGE, and it's rack is LARGE also, looks 2' tall and tremendous mass. The area we hunt backs up to a very large continuous block of woods thousands of acres, I assume he wandered onto our place from there, and worry he may not be seen again.

Here's mommicked's buck he talked about. Trying to get a better pic. I guess the pic was enlarged at some point, hence, the fuzziness....

'speck, any luck yet? Seeing anything? We don't have snow to at least see tracks...

EDIT: Added as an attachment, doesn't want to resize when transfering from photobucket.............

Re: DEER HUNTERS! Lets see the pics, hear the stories!

Thanks again Wimusky, The thing that gets me about this buck is, he is an old, big bodied buck, and the rack still looks huge. Usually a nice set of horns looks kinda small on a larger framed buck. I've named him the ghost buck, because until now I didn't believe he was here, and we may not "see" him again. Maybe dad will get lucky or the old buck will do something stupid, like show up in daylight hours, and I can get some real nice pics. I've been telling the old man to not stare at it if he spies it approaching his stand through the brush, only glance now and then, so's not to get too excited to make a good shot. I know from many stories of many friends, that this happens all to often w large, trophy animals, that's why they live so long in pressured areas IMO! This paricular area has very little pressure.
