There seemed to be alot of interest in this topic last year. My season starts next Sat Nov 5th. Saw about a dozen deer, tho no antlers, last Sat while scouting. The crops are down cuz the weather has been dry, so the woods should be full of deer, as there are no corn fields to hide in... Im gettn' da fever! Good luck all!!!;):D

Re: DEER HUNTERS! Lets see the pics, hear the stories!

The old Stillhunter got one wednesday, just a 2yr. old slickhead, but a trophy to me. I shot her w a muzzleloader while sitting on a folding stool, No scent,or bait, plenty of White Oak acorns though still falling here. She snuck up over a rise as I was studying some quiet noise in the leaves In a thicket maybe 40 yrds from me trying to tell if it was a deer or squirrel. When I heard HER and turned to look, she was 16 yrds from me! walking slowly. A neck shot dropped her w an hour of daylight, so I reloaded and sat till dark, waiting for another one! I prefer to hunt on the ground and feel more satisfaction taking them this way, more so when they come in close. Most of the Hunters I know hunt from portable or permanent stands to keep their scent away from the deers nose. I like to use the wind and terrain as well as sign and trails to set up in places I think can be succesfull. I seem to be getting better at it each year. I do occasionally hunt from stands esp. when bowhunting.

Ive seen the bucks yall take up there. They make a good N.C. buck look like a scrawny goat!! I hear they can be hard to get because of the thick cedar? swamps or something and they grow old and big hiding in the tough terrain.

Yeah, we call 'dem bigguns Swamp bucks. They can get to be monsters. They dont taste as good as the farmland bucks, cuz they eat swamp grass and stuff . When ya hunt em, some times ya don't see em till there 10 ft away. Talk about an adrenalin rush ! Where I hunt its all agricultural land so they eat corn, soy beans and alphalfa. Makes for much better flavor

Good Luck !!!

Do mule deer count, or do you only want white tail? Got my first mule deer last week in CO. Now it is time to switch gears to archery and PA whitetail.

Mule Deer taste a lot like whitetail, but for the best of the best it is the elk meat. YUM! Had some fresh elk for supper tonight ... tenderloin fried in butter with peppers and onions! YUM!

What region of Colorado is that? It is so beautifull and looks like a challenging area to hunt with the brush/fields, combined w the long range views. PaulT, Huge swamp buck,"10 ft'":eek::eek::eek:!!!, I'm slowly working towards that goal, closer all the time............... Then I could use a spear!!!

21 miles south of Steamboat. And yep, it has it's challenges. One shot can be 20 yards and the next 400 yards or more ... tough to know how to sight in the gun ... but lots of fun!

I assume you do alot of spot and stalk in that terrain? Are you allowed to drive them also? fisherguy' those Moose must be amatures, that rope job is lousy and looks like the guy would fall off easily!:D

Opening day of rifle season is Nov. 12th here, but sadly, I'll be missing that weekend. Double sad, since Im missing opening weekend to go to a memorial game dinner in NY for a friend who died of lung cancer.
Ed, aka, Johnny Bullhead had put on The Squirrel Roast for around 30 years. This will be the first and only Squirrel Roast without Johnny Bullhead, so you could tell me there was no limit on whitetail for that weekend, and I still wouldn't be in the woods.

Some nice looking heads on the tail gate.

Did a bioligist take any brain samples to check for whirling disease(CWD) before you can eat the meat?

Some spot and stock, some still hunting, some sitting. Really can't "drive" elk (it is legal, just not real effective). They are not like whitetail at all in that regard. Once they start running they may not stop till they hit the next state!

Did try to slowly push them a little, but that didn't work well.

No, we are far enough from Rocky National Forest that it isn't a problem. In Rocky they say 13% of the herd has CWD! YIKES! But where we are hunting no one seems to worry about it at all. Guess that is the difference that herd management makes.
