Re: DEER HUNTERS! Lets see the pics, hear the stories!

Here's a small 8 that my brother shot behind dad's place opening weekend in Mn. He shot a 6 too. His 14yr old daughter passed up on a "spike" in the field, so she said. When asked what it looked like, she said the rack had a curve to it. Who knows how big it was, but it wasn't a spike. I think she didn't know what to do since this was the first time by herself in a stand. Nobody to tell her to shoot!

I heard Mn is having a slow season. But, it can't be that slow. Where's the pix??!! Or, at least stories. Seeing any????

WI opener this weekend. Stand is all brushed out....

Re: DEER HUNTERS! Lets see the pics, hear the stories!

Have a tale to tell, not a good one. Incidentally,, last week I smacked a solid 7 pointer and a small doe. Saw 6 or 7 small bucks opening wkend and another dozen or so flat heads.
Unfortunantly, we had a fatality in our group of 5 hunters. A father and son that has been hunting with us for the last 3 or 4 years, rolled thier utv/atv, a side by side, 2 seater early Mon morning. The son is a 32 yr old lawyer and his father, 60 has his own construction business in Appleton Wi. The season opened Sat, the son shot a smaller, older 11 point Sun eve. They were going to go out just for a few hrs Mon morning to see if dad could fill his buck tag. The son wanted to be in the office by noon. It was a colder morning, dad was driving, son in the psgr seat. The father leaned out of the atv to wipe frost of the outside of the windshield, its unclear if he turned the wheel to the right or just upset the center of gravity. The result was the rear end fishtailing to the left, then rolling on its side. The father hit the ground, no helmet, the atv came down and the roll bar landed on his head causing severe head trauma and he died at the scene. The father was going to retire in 2 years and move to his cabin in the Colorado mountains. We had just got done looking at the pics. A man of strong faith, even at the deer shack he would say prayers before every meal. A super nice guy, his life snuffed in an instant. He wasn't even off trail, but on a gravel road that circles our property. Remember to tell your family ya love em, you never know when your number will come up.....

Sorry to hear of the passing of your friend, Paul. The aspeck family prayers are with this family and for you and all his friends. Very sad, but always a good remembrance that no matter how skilled we are, something can always happen. That is why it is so important to have your affairs in order and to be ready to meet your Maker. Life is short and there is only 1 breath separating us from the hereafter.

A friend and business man from our town (funeral home director, actually) was hunting in Wyoming this year and fell off his horse with his foot caught in the stirrup. The horse dragged him for about 100 feet before stopping. This happened about a month ago and he has just been transported to a rehab, the word is that he will probably remain a quadriplegic the rest of his life from the broken neck he suffered in the fall.

Please, be careful out there!

Hey Pauly, that's some tough stuff right there. Heart goes out to the son who witnessed, and was a part of, the accident and the passing of his father. Plus all their family and you and the rest of the hunting party.

x2 what aspeck said............

These were taken this past weekend in my back yard. The does came in and then were chased off by the buck.

PaulT, I'm very sorry to hear of that tragedy on what should be a joyous trip. Just terrible. I feel bad for the son the most. I cannot imagine losing my father that way.

Let a spike walk past me at 8am. Then starting at 10am, the snows came to the tune of 10"! They forecasted 1- 4 for our area. I might have screwed up just like the weatherman. Now I have to plow tomorrow on the 2nd day of the opener.......

Regular firearms ends a 11/27. On 11/28, the blackpowder season kicks in until 12/7. Then 12/8thru 12/11 is the late doe season for firearms.. Plenty of hunting, weather cooperating.....

Ya going out with the smokepole? My ML season starts Sat and runs 16 days. I think i am going to have to go play in the woods for awhile. I like the challenge and having our 500 acres to myself. Pretty intense...

More than likely. Our season starts next Monday for 10 days. If all else fails, I'll do the 4 day doe hunt that starts right after BP. Me and my bud both have smokers. Even if we get deer in the regular season, we can donate extras. Which is a good deal that helps benefit others. I really like the BP season. We can go pretty much wherever we want and not see hunters. Alot more relaxing. Finally got back in the woods tonite since opening morning. Didn't see a thing. Will try again in the morning. Cooling down a bit. 13? as we speak. The low was only "supposed" to be 20?.

Re: DEER HUNTERS! Lets see the pics, hear the stories!

I've taken to hunting w a single shot .308 rifle last few years. I use my muzzleloader alot also after BP season, because I don't have to be in a stand 10', as required for centerfire rifles in several counties in my area, including the one I live in. My CVA Optima is plenty accurate at 100yrds+. More than most of my shots at Deer in the woods here. Black powder guns have come along ways in the last 10+yrs compared to the side hammer or flintlocks. Follow up shots should not be counted on anyway:D
