Chris, If you are worried about the smoke and oil slick, use synthetic oil. It cuts down a lot on both. Rick

That's a BIG 10-4. Also, knowing the advancements in the lubricating industry over the years ESPECIALLY when you consider full syn., I still have a problem with the 1 quart/6 gallon tank oil ratio......4 qts/gallon, 6 gallons = 24 quarts gas/1 oil 24:1 that was required back then......and yes I know a lot of knowledgeable folks on here don't support that idea, but to each his own.......I mean when you can run a Mercedes 300,000 miles on full syn, tear it down to investigate wear and find almost none (with pictures and all)....geez. Back then (late 50's) in my town, 47,000 mi for a valve job and full engine redo at 100,000.

lets find out where he lives first. i have full and singular rights under the canadian clunker program ,lol.yes, i use syn oil only in my 1957 johnson(18hp)and there,s barely any smoke atall!actually i use full syn in all my motors be they outboards or my truck or my snowblower etc etc.

There is a guy in Florida who sells small outboards, who got into vintage outboards about a year or more ago. He now has a 1957 Johnson 18hp that has been repainted. While its very sharp looking, he wants $1,395 for it!

He also has a '58 Bigtwin 35hp, which has not been repainted - he wants $1,595 for it. If he repaints it, he wants $1,995.

I have a pair of '58 Bigtwins sitting in my shop.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, I wonder if outboard motor buyers in Louisiana are as dumb as they apparently are in Florida?!!!

Hah, i've seen them for that much on smalloutboards.com, They've been on there forever, so i don't know if the owner has a lot of sentimental value on all his outboards or what!

Hey... I just got on this thread... I've been in Florida for a month with all the "dumb outboard motor buyers"!

As y'all know, I love the 18's... I have 10 of them or so... Run em on everything... Pontoon boat, 14' tinny, home made Craig Cat... etc... Great strong, light efficient engines. And yes, I use full synthetic only. Just came back with 3 gallons of Pennzoil from Walmart as it's very hard to find up here... That should last me till next season...

I sold a very badly painted '57 18hp last summer with tank for $400. It ran great though. Almost got me up to 40 kmh in my 14'er. I can sell em for that price here. Folks do prefer a fibreglass cowling though if possible. I sold a '63 also with tank for $400 last summer. So lots of folks want them.

I can see you preferring the clean 4 stroke though. That is their only weakness in my opinion. They do pollute unfortunately. That's why I pay about 50% more and use the full synthetic oil.
