Re: Destruction thread - the end of my parts boat - 1989 Sea Ray 20'

So, I'm coming inside once in a while to relax and let my 18v batteries recharge. Yes, would you believe I'm doing this all with a cordless 18V sawzall? I could use 2 more batteries, though.

On with the pictures.

Here is a "first garbage pickup" picture. I wasn't sure how the garbage guys would respond to my piles of fiberglass, but I was working at home the Friday that he came for the first time with a pile, and he was totally cool with it.

IMG_2461s.jpg

And there it all goes - first week pile gone.
IMG_2476s.jpg

It was actually very surprising to me how little the pile was for how much of the boat was gone. Not nearly the mass of garbage I thought it would be.

Some "general" pictures to follow. I took quite a few. Let me know if I get too boring with them.

I didn't have any SAE 12-point sockets, so I couldn't take apart the y-pipe, and thus, couldn't disassemble the transom mount, etc. Had to wait a few days for it to show up (bought a nice set off Amazon).

The windshield / side windows are in great shape. They may make their way to my boat eventually. The frames are in better condition than mine.

Final piece off - notice the plate in the upper left of the steering console.

I wonder what J.H. Kuypers would think of this thread. [grin]

Got my sockets, and pulled off the y-pipe -time to pull the gimbal housing and inner transom plate.

IMG_2479s.jpg

IMG_2481s.jpg

Might as well cut out the transom and see what is left of it. Suprisingly, most of the rot was at the top. It was somewhat solid at the bottom, but soaking wet and the plywood was all seperating.

One more... Other side of the transom, just as rotted.

Starting to cut out the other side now - notice my boat is in full view of this, in case it decides it wants to misbehave [evil grin]

And, just in case the boat wasn't gross enough yet, look what I found under the carpet by the driver's footwell.

good thread....

there is a lot of valuable information here if you take the time to look.

there is also a ton of parts there. the isolators them selves are worth money !

Re: Destruction thread - the end of my parts boat - 1989 Sea Ray 20'

Thanks oops!, and I agree. A lot of the pictures I took (most yet to come) have value to me because I get to see how my boat was built on a cross section basis, and when I go in to repair parts of it, I'm going to know exactly what I need to improve upon. I've already seen a couple very questionable things that I'm now planning on looking into on my boat - most glaring is the motor mounts and how they were put together with the hull. [teaser - you'll have to wait to see the pictures]

Are the isolators you speak of what I would call motor mounts? At some point, I'll probably post up a list of parts I will Ebay, and ask opinions on what I should ask for them. I'm sure I can probably make back what I paid for the boat & trailer by selling some of the parts. Probably 2x what I paid if I sell the Alpha One, but I'm thinking I like having a spare. :D

As you will see in many pictures, because the wood on the boat was so wet, or maybe because it was constructed poorly, the glass seperated from the wood all over the boat. I was able to pull up chips or even big sheets of fiberglass very often - exposing the plywood.

Cross section of the seat base on the starboard side. If you look closely, you can make out the black corrigated tubing they used to run the fuel fill tube and vent tube, right under that cutout area. That lighter color is the reflection from water sitting in it.

Pulling up the carpet if I can and bagging it for the garbage.

Re: Destruction thread - the end of my parts boat - 1989 Sea Ray 20'

I had read in another thread that the foam in the seats is actually pretty expensive, so rather than letting it go into the garbage, I pulled all the seats apart and will bag up the foam for any projects I may need to do on my boat. I assume the foam on my boat is fine, but you never know, so why take a chance of throwing it away now.

Some of this was somewhat exploratory to see what would be the best way to start cutting off the front of the boat.

Re: Destruction thread - the end of my parts boat - 1989 Sea Ray 20'

Thought this looked pretty funny. I would have gotten up there with a steering wheel, but nobody else was home to take the picture. Kind of like the obligatory "car guy" picture of standing in an engine bay with no engine in it. So, the bulkhead you see is the back of the ski locker, and the next section is the gas tank area.

IMG_2535s.jpg

Oh, that was quick - seats gone and that section on the ground.

IMG_2537s.jpg

Cross section of the gas tank area, behind the front seats. You can see how bad the stringers are (were) in this area. The foam is surprisingly dry, except the top 1" near the plywood (which is soaked), and the bottom 1". The foam under the tank is saturated front to back pretty much. It really doesn't seem worth it to put foam under there to me, regardless of how well you glass. Structural?

IMG_2538s.jpg

You can see here how everything is seperating. Flooring from the stringer, foam from the stringer and fiberglass.

IMG_2539s.jpg

And that ends yesterday. Rain rolled in earlier than expected, so I cleaned up my tools and called it a night around 4:30pm. Here is what the junk pile looked like on Friday when I quit. Keep in mind that the garbage had been picked up that morning, so my week 2 pile was gone. This is the start of Week 3.

Re: Destruction thread - the end of my parts boat - 1989 Sea Ray 20'

Saturday (9/17/11) started out with the goal of finishing the destruction, but before we go there, I thought you would enjoy seeing what all is in the bottom of the oil pan I pulled off the 4.3l. As you can see, there was a LOT of bearing material in there.

IMG_2545s.jpg

This boat had the sun deck with bench seat in the back, which was different than mine, but no difference in the way it was built from what I can tell, other than above the floor. So the next section to come off would be right in front of the bench.

IMG_2546s.jpg

IMG_2547s.jpg

IMG_2550s.jpg

You can see on the left how the fiberglass laying over the deck is seperating completely. When tearing it apart, I could just grab hold and lift that entire chunk of fiberglass off the plywood

IMG_2552s.jpg

This section is under the fuel tank and has the PVC drain running from the ski locker back to the bilge area. The ply here was still solid, but soaked, and as mentioned before, the foam was soaked as well. Still a dumb place for foam if you ask me.

Still in the gas tank area, you can see how badly the stringers are rotted. The sawzall pretty much just melts through any of these areas.

IMG_2551s.jpg

Shot of the stringer / deck construction.

IMG_2554s.jpg

These next couple shots just show how I cut up the pieces for the garbage guys. Everything came apart really easily, as you can see.

IMG_2555s.jpg

IMG_2556s.jpg

IMG_2557s.jpg

Yeah, the fiberglass just slides right off the stringers, just like that.

Re: Destruction thread - the end of my parts boat - 1989 Sea Ray 20'

Since the fiberglass was seperating from the stringers and deck pretty easily, I was able to pull on the seat boxes and just remove them from the boat once I cut the plywood deck. The tabbing on the outside was still pretty firm and strong, but no match for folding it over on itself.

IMG_2559s.jpg

IMG_2561s.jpg

IMG_2562s.jpg

And now, my back support is holding up all that is left of the boat.

Aluminum hulls eliminate all most all of those problems. ;)
