I've been scratching my head on this one. I have a 1987 Sea Ray Seville 20 ft CC. It has a 3 litre in line 4 engine and a alpha gen 1 stern drive. The engine and drive have been repainted so many times, new decals etc that model and serial numbers are history and I have no records from PO's.

I believe the engine is likely to be GM. I am not sure. When it comes to parts I am going to have to be. Is their a definitive means in serial number abstensia that I can determine?

Same to for my stern drive. What gear ratio etc when replacing parts.

Absolute noob when it comes to boats, I can spin a spanner, but will have to follow the book of words for this one until I get more experience and familiarity. But which book and micro fishe list if I am not even sure of what I have? So far I have been lucky in only replacing bearings and seals in the stern drive, but I doubt that will be good enough for long. The whole job is looking grim.

Oh bother!! No good I'm afraid. The body there has taken a scrape at some point. I get maybe 5 numbers and guesswork on blurs

The numbers appear to be 645719 4 however that number does not reference against a range in the tables in the sticky

Is there a reason why you would need to know the gear ratio? Are you having some kind of problem? There is another way you can figure it out, but unless your having some kind of problem I don't see the point in going through the trouble.

Ayuh,.... Yer 3.0l motor is in fact Chevy based,...
For parts, ya just gotta figure out which carb, 'n ignition is on it,...
The basic long block has changed very little, from the '60s, up past yer motor til 'bout '90,...

Yer drive is a MR/ Alpha 1, in 1.98:1,... if it's original,...

So,.... it comes down to just what parts yer lookin' for,...

Well, It's the dealer. Everytime I ask for a part they go into this spiel about which particular Alpha Gen 1 etc etc. All I want is the seal that fits in the bottom of the upper housing that protects the drive shaft from water ingress onto the splines. Dealer says drive shaft thickness varied between Gen 1 models and I need a serial number. When I gave him what I serial I had he lost interest and he pointed me to web based micro fische and said identify part number. When I go to web page and find a alpha gen 1 section there are indeed more variants than I could shake a stick at. Now I am rebuilding this stern drive but it's coming to the point of exasperation of canning the whole affair and just buying a whole and complete replacement unit

This is the fische of my upper, but show me where that seal is? The drawing is incomplete?

ahh ignition. One distributer cap looks pretty much like another. Is there a secret you'd like to impart on how to tell what / which it is?
