We used to run V4 lower units on the race boats with a V6 to reduce drag (smaller case than a V6). It also gave us a 2:1 gear ratio. Accelerated quicker. Helpful with a drag boat. Helpful on a Mod-VP on a short course with tight turns.<br /><br />We'd put a V6 propshaft in a V4 unit so we could still run the larger diameter props. <br /><br />We ran a V6 unit on one of the V8 outboard Offshore boats in certian races. Again, it accelerated a bit better, good in really rough water.<br /><br />I used to run a V4 unit on a 60 degree 150 on a ski boat. Ski boats accelerate quick anyway and the 60 degree motors are real snappy. I could pull up 2 slalom skiers in a heartbeat.
