Can you actually put a v-4 on a 6 cylinder and run that engine without damaging it? I know the gear ratios are different. Thanks for the input

Re: Dhadley, I read your post on lower units.

We used to run V4 lower units on the race boats with a V6 to reduce drag (smaller case than a V6). It also gave us a 2:1 gear ratio. Accelerated quicker. Helpful with a drag boat. Helpful on a Mod-VP on a short course with tight turns.

We'd put a V6 propshaft in a V4 unit so we could still run the larger diameter props.

We ran a V6 unit on one of the V8 outboard Offshore boats in certian races. Again, it accelerated a bit better, good in really rough water.

I used to run a V4 unit on a 60 degree 150 on a ski boat. Ski boats accelerate quick anyway and the 60 degree motors are real snappy. I could pull up 2 slalom skiers in a heartbeat.

Would you burn more fuel running a v-4 lower unit on a v-6 outboard?

With less drag the boat should actually go a bit faster thus improving mpg.

Exactly. It all kinda worked out nearly the same.

Is the driveshaft wider and thicker on a v-6 compared to a v-4?

The slpines at the top are the same. Some are shorter than others. On some the area right below the groove is thicker.
