We've been married almost 14 years, but for the last 3 or 4 my wife has been bugging me to upgrade her diamond ring that I gave her when we got married. Seems the one I bought ~14 years ago for $3,000 isn't good enough. Besides all her friend's husbands have upgraded their wives diamond rings (according to her), so why not her. So earlier this year I finally gave in and bought her a new ring, at the tune of about $9K . On the flipside, she didn't give me a hard time about buying a boat :D.

So the question I want to ask is if anyone else has had to upgrade their wife's ring at some time in their marriage, or did I get taken to the cleaners?

You've been had. Sounds like she's trying to keep up with the Jones....

After 10 years, mine is still tickled pink with what she got ;)

Re: Diamond Ring Upgrade???

On our 25th anniversary (1980) my great aunt gave my wife the engagement ring (band of 10 .25c diamonds from Tiffany) that Great Uncle gave her in 1920.

When we married I was a Navy white hat, 19 years old, so she had never had a diamond and she would never have asked for one. She said her simple gold band was a reminder of how far we had come.

I am not impressed with wives who ask for a bigger diamond because all her friends have one. Sounds very adolescent to me.

You were washed and dried. I agree with the other posts. I wouldn't have done it. The original diamond ring was suppose to have some meaning behind it when you were married. Now it just got tossed to the side like it meant nothing. I would be very hurt if my wife asked for an upgrade. 18 years and my wife is very happy, at least with the ring....:)

My wife (15 years) hasn't asked, but I wouldn't have a problem if she did. Things change. You get older, hopefully have a little more money, a little wiser. I don't see any difference in that and me wanting a new/better toy.

A new/better toy at least is functional and improves your activities. A new/better ring does ..............what? Increase her bragging rights to her friends? If that's all she's interested in, it's time to upgrade the wife!

Re: Diamond Ring Upgrade???

I proposed to my wife (of 16+ years now) with the little plastic ring you get when you open a bottle of vegetable oil. No kidding. I bought her a proper small diamond before the wedding though. She still has both. A few years ago, she saw a ring she liked, and I bought it, as a surprise for her, on our 10th anniversary. It was a honkin' big 2ct solitaire set in platinum, with a nice ring guard in platinum, with more ice in it, along with an anniversary band with another 2ct (5 separate diamonds) set in platinum to go with it. Threw in a set of 2ct (1 each) platinum and diamond earrings to go with it. Dont even ASK how much all that cost. She loved it. She loved it so much, she never wears it. It sits inside her armoire, right beside the plastic one, and the original gold one I bought for her, and both of the wedding bands I have gone through since then. She wears a Tungsten Carbide band, that matches mine, and could care less what other women wear.

No offense to the OP, but my wife would never have asked for another ring, except for the fact that hers was damaged. Even then, she didn't ask for or expect anything bigger than what her friends have. She just wanted a ring she could wear. I went all out, but not at her request. Any woman (or anyone...period) that has to have something newer, bigger, faster, shinier, or more expensive...just to keep up with or outdo another person...is shallow and materialistic to say the least. Not to say you shouldn't if you can, but it should not be expected or forced upon. Just sayin...

I completely disagree! First, I can't see my wife ever asking for another ring, but if she does, who cares? I just bought a 1978 CJ5. It wasn't cheap, and it won't increase or improve her activities at all, but she's ok with it, if I'm happy. I buy tools/guns/toys all the time that I don't need. It does nothing for her functionalitly, but she doesn't complain. My wife and I didn't get married because of a ring, it has nothing to do with our marriage. If she wants a new one, she can have it.

My wife would rather keep the diamond dust ring and get more fishing tackle.

Re: Diamond Ring Upgrade???

These "terms" all but bring a tear to my eye.
HTH can I not come up with a marketing ploy as clever as that?
I mean, "A Diamond Ring Upgrade"? HMOG!

With my old sheila, I don't care - she can have whatever she wants - but I think she would snigger at a "A Diamond Ring Upgrade".
But, mothers day is coming, and she has her eye on 2 rings, (old antique style things) that i don't think are cheap, and every time an important milestone or event occurs in her life, she gets 'an appropriate charm' thing, and has it put on her bracelet - (we are so blxxdy old she has 2 of them, and when I saw them the other day, I thought to myself, you'r going to need another one soon).

Anyway, each to their own.
Cheers
Phillip

Yes a small rowboat would look cute with that name  :D

I have a very close friend who owns a jewelry store and if it is done right........ a simple new setting maybe with an added stone or two keeps the ladies happy ;)

A three stone anniversary ring someday? Maybe. A replacement for her engagement ring? No way! Bob's suggestion above is a pretty good one.

Guys, can we all agree that jewelry is about the stupidest thing ever to spend money one? Good grief. My model trains are pretty stupid too but at least I can play with them! (and my son enjoys them too).

Re: Diamond Ring Upgrade???

I think you got had! Even De Beers knows that, as their saying is "A diamond is forever" not "Two diamond rings are for eternity."

So what if all the other wives are getting diamond upgrades, I bet you know plenty of guys getting wife upgrades. I'm sure she wouldn't go for that one aye!

I waited until I was married with my wife for 10 years until I bought her a diamond ring. I told her I had to make sure she would stick around first.

Anyways, good luck with the purchase and be sure to ask her if it is as heavy as a new outboard!!!!!!!!

Re: Diamond Ring Upgrade???

My daughter had an upgrade that her husband decided to do for her based on the change in their financial status since they first got married. It was a HUGE upgrade, but again, it was his choice. They've worked extremely hard and now have a very successful business. It was important to him to do this for her.

Me personally, I'm happy with my original ring(s) because it signafies so much more than the dollar value. I carry an emotional attachment to gifts from the heart no matter what the cost. I truly value the thought and emotion that was given along with it at that time in our lives.

Re: Diamond Ring Upgrade???

Could barely afford the plain inexpensive gold bands we used to get married. No diamond rings. Years later my wife lost her plain gold wedding band on a beach somewhere on the gulf side of Florida, not far from Ft. Meyers. So had she a diamond, she'd have lost it.
On our 10th anniversary, I bought here a diamond anniversary band, so far she's not lost it.
Upgrade a wedding righ? Why? Reminds me of those "Bridezilla" types- they're more interested in the wedding than the marriage.

Still happily married 27+ years, on my 10K $100 gold band.

Been married for 22+ years. My 3rd, her second. We got married with tourquoise rings. Still have them, still wear them. Thought about buying her a diamond, she said. "Why that don't make a marriage last". I bought a boat !!!! ;)

Re: Diamond Ring Upgrade???

I go with taken to the cleaners on this.
I think that upgrading a wedding ring is more about status. I have gotten my wife many new diamond rings, but they are for other fingers and not to replace the wedding ring. She would not even want to upgrade the ring that I picked out.
