Dies when I push the throttle

Had a gas leak,,,,,,fixed
Cleaned the carbs........I'm 99.9% sure the floats are set OK.
New plugs
Put in new gas........though there was gas from last year......added some water removal fluid.

Boat starts.........tries to dies on me........push the choke a few times.......fast idle a few minutes then it will idle for 20 minutes........push the throttle gently........it moves a little.....about 200 feet then dies on me. It will start again but has a hard time doing so. It's a 28 ft boat so rowing this thing to shore is a pain and it's embarassing.

Could this be:

1) the fuel pump?
2) the "prime solonoid" not functionning properly? The choke no longer clicks when I push it.
3) any other ideas?

Thanks for the read and th input.

Did you try pumping the primer bulb when it starts to die? Borrow a portable tank with fresh gas in it and try it.

If the squeezing the bulb keeps the motor going, does that mean the fuel pump would be defective?

It would be a very good indicator of a defective pump. Have someone pump it rapidly while you try to accelerate...

It might be the fuel pump, but where was the gas leak? Did you test for air leaks?

Did you put some decent clamps on all those loose hoses in your pictures yet?

There is a small jet that come out from the manifold (it's really low) and a hose had come loose and was spitting gas towards the carbs. It was spitting gas right where the carbs and the manifold meet so I thought the gasket was torn........I took the carbs off,,,,,rebuilt them........put them back on with new gaskets,,,,,,,,,still a leak.........took the lower carb off again and leaned as far as I could to look at the manifold and saw that jet.........then the loose tube that I reattached.

I don't think it sucking air but is there a way to specifiaclly look for that?

I had never been into boating,,,,,,,,,,but I'm about to take up motorcycling instead :) (never done that either)..if I can't get this taken care of.

Thanks again

also check to see the timing base is moving. could be a stuck timing base.

The timer base has a cast in brass bushing which rotates, with very close tolerance, on the upper bearing and seal assembly as the spark is advanced or retarded. Check carefully for dirt, chips, or damage which may cause difficulty in rotating the timer base.

Re: Dies when I push the throttle

Another stupid question........I feel like the kid in the class that knows nothing and asks all the questions.......hoping that someone else needs the same info but does not dare raise his hand.

Gulp!!!!!!!!!
Does the motor have it's own oil? Aside from the oil gas mix. Is there a specific oil reservoir somewhere, where I would check the level.

Also another Gulp!

Is the water coming from the back of the unit suppose to come out very hot to the touch? I know that the water circulates to cool down but should it be that hot?

When this thing rides.........I'm taking it across the country to see all of you.:D

Thanks again

if you can't get this running you sure don't want a motorcycle. you are getting good advice.
