Hi
Can anyone spread some light on how to turn a right hand rotation Yanmar D27 into a counter rotation.
Can it be done?
I have 2 right handers that I would like to put onto 1 boat
Thanks

Re: Diesel Outboard

Just shooting in the dark but There probably isn't such a thing.
If there is I wonder where you woulds find a left hand prop.
except from Yanmar. It is really nice to have counter rotating props on a twin installation. Lots of twins have been run without. Counter rotation wouldn't be as critical with a smaller outboard.

Re: Diesel Outboard

Hi steelespike
Getting a prop isn't a problem. A yamaha prop from a 25-30hp fit them.the splines are the same but the prop is a little bit lighter built than the Yanmar version & they're 1/3 of the price.
Apparently they give less acceleration but a slightly faster top end but it's not a huge difference.
The fish farms in Scotland use Yamaha props as replacements for they're Yanmars
They have a few with counter rotation engines as well but they don't know how the gearboxs are set up to get them that way.
I do know that some gearboxs can be changed by swapping the drive pinions around.not sure with the Yanmar though
Looks like I might need to get my hands dirty and start experimenting

Can you have one in forward gear and one in reverse? given the prop is proper

Why not hang them both and use them as is. Why bother having one counter rotating?
What do they do if you want to run triples?
Will your boat really be sporty enough to be adversely effected with all engines turning the same?

Re: Diesel Outboard

with 2 diesel engines weighing 85kg each, and only kicking out 27hp, it was never a sporty issue. I just wanted to know if it could be done.purely from an aesthetic point of view.
