Different Carburetor for Same Motor?

Hi,

I just picked up another 35hp Bigtwin (1957 serial No.25930). I had just rebuilt the carburetor for my 1958 35 hp Bigtwin (serial No. 25937). I switched the rebuilt carburetor onto the "1957" motor.

The 1957 carb had the fuel filter attached, the 1958 did not. Is the lack of an attached fuel filter the only difference between the two models, or is there a difference in performance/function?

The 1957 motor had paint missing from the threads in a location that mirrored the screw location for the fuel filter that was on the "58". Is it possible that someone had switched the carb from a filterless to one with an attached filter.

Side note: I found a fuel pump, and will hopefully see how it performs tomorrow.

Thanks again,
Josh

Re: Different Carburetor for Same Motor?

I think the carbs are the same....not positive though, been a long time since my dad combined a 'rude and a Buccuneer to make a 57/58 motor...these were 33's i think...anyway what i wanted to say was make REAL sure that there arent several of the o-rings from the needles stuck in the carbs...BOTH of these motors had several left up in there...i guess when they stuck and didn't come out with needle people just replaced them....once we got the seats cleaned out for the needles, they ran so great....sucked gas though. Good Luck.

they actually will run fine with out a filter, the carb just gets dirty faster. you can put an inline filter.

Re: Different Carburetor for Same Motor?

yamamarinetech40,
I already rebuilt the carb, and found 3 petrified sets of packing washers that I had to pick at with my bio lab disection kit to remove. Thanks for the heads-up though.

Tashasdaddy,
I decided to use the seperate filter, and put it in the stock location.

I took the boat out for a run today: the fuel pump conversion worked, the filter worked, and the rebuilt carb worked. But...it was only running on one cylinder. I trouble shot it and fixed the problem. It's running great and I'm taking it through its pases tomorrow.

Thanks again guys,
Josh
