Re: Digital Camera Rant

SLR's aren't for everyone, my wife consistently has issues with my Canon EOS 30D DSLR. Even though she uses the automatic functions exclusively she doesn't compensate for white balance under different light etc. High pressure sodium lights are her nemesis.:p

All the tweaks and buttons are a PITA for her, for me its what makes photography fun and challenging. I have given up trying to teach her to review her shots and take samples under the prevailing light and white balance all the time so she can take good photos, she just give the camera to me. Her skills are in the post processing stage where she loves taking the pics and putting them in collages and doing "creative memories" type stuff. I can't be bothered with those things.

Everyone has different needs and skill sets, this is why I listed the G series camera. A girl I used to take wedding photos with uses one exclusively and her pics are great, give her my D30 and shes lost. While shooting weddings with her I find she is more concerned with artistic content than I, her skills complement my technical skills for perspective and lighting. Often I grab her shoulders and move her 5 feet one way or another so her framing and lighting are perfect...same picture just better technique.

For her that G10 was a perfect match to her skills and needs, its automatic functions complement her style and won't let her take a bad picture...my camera will let you take bad pictures all day if you want. I hesitate to recommend lesser cameras because I have seen such garbage produced in the last 5 years it isn't even funny. The OP has pointed out what I have seen, mfg's have degraded sensor quality and logic processor intelligence and replaced it with automatic ISO and antishake functions in an attempt to allow even a monkey to take an in focus picture without blur...at the expense of quality and sharpness.

A skilled person could sit back and critique other peoples pictures all day and find fault with nearly every camera on the market, the fact of the matter is 99% of the people out there just want a picture...any picture. All you have to do is watch the parents at the elementary school Christmas play holding up their camera phones to snap a pic of little johnny in his Joseph outfit for posterity, I cringe knowing what kind of pic they just took and have to wonder how this could be acceptable to anyone but then realize...its a picture of little Johnny and anything is better than nothing.

To the OP I would recommend going to a good camera shop where they will let you play with various cameras in the shop, they have skilled staff and can make educated recommendations to you and evaluate your needs. I have one close to me and the guys at the counter recognize me and know the equipment I already have, they understand I am looking at $3000 lenses and work with professionals all the time (I'm no professional BTW). They price match for me all the time, even online pricing, so buying from them is a no brainer. Their experience with various equipment is invaluable to me, they have steered me away from pieces I either don't need or don't fit my requirements and even order in stuff so I can try it out. This kind of service is worth paying a little extra for and being given the camera to play with in the shop to test it out is nice. Not to mention they have a used camera cabinet where they sell items on consignment, lots of great stuff in there and the prices are hard to walk away from...there is an SLR film camera in there I have to pry myself away from everytime I go...must...resist...spending...more...money!

Worse thing you can do is buy a camera from Walmart to save $10 and find out its a piece of junk or doesn't do what you want. Take a trip to the local camera shop and talk to the staff...heck even some of the customers have great advice, you won't be sorry.

I believe that the 30D has an automatic WB function. If your wife is not using that, try setting it for her. It won't be perfect, but it won't be too shabby, either.

A little off the OP's topic, but useful info to him, while considering various cameras.

Auto WB doesn't work well with High Pressure Sodium lamps on this camera. Since the automatic function on this camera doesn't save RAW files you can't adjust later. Manual modes allow RAW imaging in addition to JPG's so they can be adjusted for WB after the fact.

Expecting my non-technical wife to instinctively know the difference in lighting color temperature and manually select WB modes or use the manual functions properly is something I have given up on, kinda like checking the oil on her car...the importance does not register.:D

Love her anyway, just don't give her my DSLR.

Re: Digital Camera Rant

Well wifey picked up a Canon Powershot SX120 while I was at work today. I'll give it a go and see how I like it. The 10x zoom will be nice. "Digital" zoom is useless marketing fluff imho. That's what Photoshop is for.:D I use macro more than zoom anyway.

The G11 does look pretty tasty though.

She's getting a Pentax DSLR pretty soon (her Asahi Pentax K1000 lenses fit it) so we'll have that. I mainly use a camera to document whatever project I'm working on, candid family photos, and occasional "artistic" shots. All I really wanted was a point and shoot that was as good as my last point and shoot. One would think buying a newer/higher model from the same brand/family would accomplish that. That's what I get for assuming.

Re: Digital Camera Rant

Which brings up an interesting question ... do the G series Canons have the ability to set White Balance for various light sources? I have read a bit about them and know that they are outstanding cameras, but I have no idea if they do this sort of thing. That said, I wouldn't be surprised, because the line between DSLRs and P&S cameras is becoming very thin these days.

Here's one that was shot under multiple lighting types. I shot it in RAW/JPEG with fill flash and adjusted in Photoshop, from the RAW image. The client was a tobacco shop distributor, who wanted content for his website. It was shot in the New Orleans Convention Center, during a tobacco show.

Once again, we are sort of off topic, but the OP doesn't want a DSLR and the Canon G10 & G11 will shoot in RAW and/or JPEG, so he could do this if he wanted.

Re: Digital Camera Rant

I think I'll keep the Cannon SX 120. My initial impression is that the camera feels a little on the cheap side and the battery/memory card door is hard to open. So far, that's my only gripe. I took some indoor test pictures and they look a lot better than the Sony we took back. I think they probably look better than my old Sony too but not by a large margin. The camera has a lot of nice features (many I won't use), and a totally manual mode which will help me learn more about photography. I probably won't be able to justify buying a more expensive camera unless I get experienced enough to outgrow this one.

Yeah, that battery door is a bit of a pain. I found the best way to open it is by pulling down on the latch, then pulling sideways on the door. Works easily for me that way.

Glad you found something you both like!

Some do, some do not, - eg. the G11 can but the G10 cannot (per dpreview). I think all the newer "G"'s do.

Heh well she doesn't have to like it as she has vowed not to touch it. She felt bad when she took my camera to school and it got stolen. She's off 'till after New Years so it's been her mission to find a replacement camera for me.

She did photography and graphic design for her bachelors degree. During that time she studied B&W photography. The professor would not allow students to use any automatic settings. She bought an old Asahi Pentax K1000 camera. It's totally manual. I don't know much about cameras but she says it's a popular old workhorse camera. She has bought several lenses for it. She only uses it for B&W and developed her own film when she had access to a darkroom. Her mom is a thrift store junkie. She will often buy cheap cameras to give to her for her collection. Well last year she handed her a paper sack that contained yet another Asahi Pentax K1000 and several more lenses. I think she paid $20 for the whole shebang lol. Now she's wanting a DSLR. The new Pentax camera will take all the lenses she has now and reviews pretty well so she'll probably go with that.

Anyway thanks for all the responses. Feel free to hijack away...:D
