Re: Digital Dashboard (pics)

Just read through most of the post. Great work Bubba!! Most of the stuff is beyond me. Never worked with PLC's, but you can do basically the same thing within Labview. You need the PC, card, wiring panel and sensors. Have never worked with the touch screen stuff either. I guess on the downside, none of this stuff comes cheap.

Very interesting. Have a great day,

Rob.

Say Ward, why can't you pop the dash up higher than that? I see no reason why you couldn't have a display pop up up to half the height of the windshield. I plan to redo my dash in a way that adds at least that much more height to it to get more usable space. I mean, who hasn't seen the Fishfinder mounted right on top of the dash..what would be the difference?

Re: Digital Dashboard (pics)

i dont know why....but it seems there is just not that much wind sheild there to see out of......due to the angle of the wind screen.....im sitting just about as hi as i can and there is still not that much to see out of......i wonder if it depends on how deep the wind screen is from the front of the dash.

ill look at ti tommorow again and see if i can imagine another way.....i really like the HUD idea :D

I can't imagine using the windshield on my boat to see out of anyway. The only real purpose I can see it having is to block rain, or for a bimini top to pop onto with the clear vinyl windshield. If it was really meant to be viewed out of, you'd think you'd have wipers ( manual or othewise ).

Re: Digital Dashboard (pics)

Hi guys,

Sorry I haven't replied....work sure cuts into fun time!
Anyway, As I don't know what oops is planning on putting in the boat for batteries and other accessories, I can't say whole lot on a 4 amp draw.

I haven't looked in depth at the product info on the displays but I am guessing that they have an adjustable backlight? That would save a lot of draw when not running in the full sunlight.

I wonder if having the speedo/tach like you have laid out (very nice) and then using a HUD for conditional animation, like when oil pressure goes high, would work. That way it is not always on the windshield but if there is a problem it is displayed front and center while the main screen is unchanged. Or, could also use the HUD for depth when there are no alarms present. Just a couple thoughts.

BTW (Colobiker) , I am mainly an Instrumentation & DeltaV guy but I have dabbled with various PLC's. PC stuff like Bubba does is not something I have played a lot with!
Combining controls and boating is only topped by controls, boating and corona's!

Re: Digital Dashboard (pics)

actually......i do have windsheild wipers...:D

ill get more detailed pics of the dash tonight......its tough to see the measuring tape on the last ones i posted.

the basic measurements are 24 wide x 12 high.....but....as mentioned...the steering wheel is going to be about 8' round....and solid so you cant see thru it.

ill also take pics of the whole configuration including the windsheild and dash.

ill get the depth of the dash to wind sheild tonight.

deckingset7035.jpg

i am going to squeeze this walk thru opening down a few inches......basically the space i have to work with is 24 ins wide by 12 ins tall...

deckingset7033.jpg

i put the bucket there so you could gauge the size.....that is NOT a full gallon ice cream pail....but one of the smaller ones.

deckingset7032.jpg

in these two pics you can see the curviture of the hull...just under the windsheild mount.....im going to use those lines in the new dash.

hope that helps......ill get the depth tonight

cheers

Re: Digital Dashboard (pics)

hey all, been away for a couple days.

this thread is really progressed.. I am liking what I see.

I like the bubba I like your 7" screen design with the function keys on the right side. 90% of the time your going to be in that screen anyway.. and say your out fishing, touch f4 and you get your fishfinder view. (however I do not know much about the internal workings of fishfinders. how much data is pushed through to the screen, would it bog down the HMI? )

yar.. delta V huh.. I am working on a project now at work, were going to be installing one for our client. I am going to be taking training in a few weeks. I am looking forward to it.

Bubba, as far as user screen setup that could be cool but I would think it would be more cost effective to have just a "stock set of screens". but everybody has their personal likes.

heres an idea. I bought my wife a honda with the navigation system, when you push a button the nav screen flips up and you can access different ports (MP3, flash.. etc) what if you had an inconspicous button inside the boat. and when you push that button the dash opens and the screen flips out, when you shut down, press the button again and the screen hides back into the dash. completely hiding your fancy computer system from prying eyes at the doc or gas station. people would look and not see any gauges.. if they ask.. you press the button and it pops out.. thats got alot of ooh and ahh factor

yes the stering wheel is where i want ti....i was thinking of lowering it....but with the solid type flat wheel.....i cant.

the walk thru will have the step....thats a really handy feature....but i will be narrowing it a few inches.

and the dash top read 12 ins

Re: Digital Dashboard (pics)

bubba,

thats a great idea. have it so it stays stationary in the center of the wheel, weighted so that when you turn the wheel it doesnt move. :p

Re: Digital Dashboard (pics)

Hmm, that solid steering wheel is going to present a challenge. Let me explain.

Assume the steering wheel is 8" away from the dash and your eye is 24" from the wheel. (Just off the wall numbers but close enough) Now imagine a "cone" starting at your eye extending to the edges of the steering wheel and on to the dash. The wheel is not blocking 8" of the dash, it would be blocking more like 12" or 14" from view. (Does that make sense? Hard to say it in text.)

Hey, hpow about we make it a 10" steering wheel and put the display in its center. LOL

it makes perfect sence.....the wheel will only be 5-7 ins away from the dash, so the blind area will only be a little smaller.

as far as the screen in the middle of the wheel, that was the first thing i thought of.......

but the only major problem...is when i turn the wheel, the rpm will either drop or redline when ever i turn the wheel...:D :D :D :D
id go from an 30 mph speed reading, dead ahead.....minus 20 mph, when truning right and 100 mph when going left......lol.

actually....i cant do that...ill pm you with why.
