Well, I broke my distributor/timing belt and I am having trouble finding one online.

My motor is a 1978 75 HP Chrysler model 757H8D

If anyone knows a good cheap place, please let me know!
Thanks,
Rich

Do you want cheap or good? LOL

Anyway, You can get a Chrysler belt from Franzmarine over at The Chrysler Crew. Probably won't be cheap.

Or you can try a bearing and drive supply store. Undoubtably it is a standard belt and can be ordered there.

I don't know what they cost because I have salvaged useable ones off junker engines. Never broke one either.

I forgot to mention: When you install the new belt, do not tighten it too much. If you do, the distributor will bind and you will have trouble putting the engine in gear and taking it out. Too loose, and the timing will wander a bit.

Tighten the distributor just enough that the belt deflects about 1/8 to 3/16 inch when a .010 feeler gauge (pressed in the center of the belt like a finger) just starts to bend.

Re: Distributor/Timing Belt Needed 75 hp

thanks Frank
I emailed Franzmarine and he had me a invoice through paypal with 5 minutes.

$31.33 total with shipping, thats not to bad.

Well, I still have not gotten the motor to run :(
Just wants to backfire. I pulled the flywheel to check the woodruff key, and it looks fine. Thats how I broke my belt, there was already a small tear in it though.

Hopefully when I get this new belt I will be able to get it into time and running.

Tanks a lot though!!

man, i hate to rub salt in the wound, but i just replaced my timing belt on my 105 chrysler, and i got it for $4.21, i had ordered one from a marine supplier, went to motion industries, and they ordered me one, its a gates industrial belt, its a 180XL037, thats the gates part number, next time, find a gates belt dealer and get them to order you one

and it sounds like youve got your motor timed 180 degrees off, make sure when you put it back together and you line your timing marks up, that the number 1 piston is all the way at the top of its stroke

Re: Distributor/Timing Belt Needed 75 hp

Well, I have another 75 Hp same model and everything sitting in my garage, with a belt on it, but it has a small tear in it also, so I was not able to use it either.

I should have looked at it though, because it is a goodyear belt. I could have gotten it from a napa, or autozone I bet for cheaper.

I will post the Part Number on here later of the three belts that I know the chrysler engines will take.

When you put it back together, line up the 0 on the flywheel with the long line on the pointer. Then set the distributor pulley so that the curved line on top matches the curve of the flywheel and the straight line points directly at it. Install belt over the pulley and tighten distributor bolts. Then, with the ignition on, rock the flywheel gently about the 0 mark. the top plug should fire someplace near plus or minus 2 degrees. If all this checks, then set the control to full throttle and recheck the timing. This MUST now be between 30 and 32 degrees. Note that the flywheel timing mark is 36 deg. so you must have it match the -4 line on the pointer.

The gap between the two plastic ends on the linkage tower and distributor should be approximately 3/8 to 1/2 inch--much different than that and the timing is off.

Pull the distributor cap and check for carbon tracks inside. They will cause firing on the wrong plug and backfiring. Also check that the plug wires are on the correct plugs. Firing order is 123, top is 1 and the wire nearest the block is 1. Cylinder 2 is the next one forward clockwise looking down on the distributor , and 3 is the rearmost.

The distributor cap should be pinned and should be able to go on one way only.

Get a Clymers--all this is explained fairly well in it.

Re: Distributor/Timing Belt Needed 75 hp

OK, I got the belt in, and did everything you said above, but I am having the same problem. I am pretty sure it is in time. The distributor curved line lines up with the flywheel with the flywheel at TDC. The motor turns fine, and will fire easily now, but it only fire ones time, like a backfire. I can leave the key turned, and turn the flywheel and I can hear all three points firing on the distributor. Also at TDC it fires within the + or - 2 like you said when I rock the flywheel

Any more ideas, on what could be causing my problems?

Also for the sealing of the carb bowl to the carb, can i just use some of the "make your own gasket stuff, or do I need to buy the actual cork ones that I have on them now?

Thanks, Rich!
